smooth problem

hello guys,

 

I'm new to 3ds max and trying to get the hang of it, but i hit a bump.

when i apply NURMS subdivision to my object it messes up the edges. Also, after i rotate+copy+attach the object to create the piece that i want, even if i weld all vertexes, the ones on the edges of the individual objects wont weld.

 

i tried to flip faces and it didnt work.

ok after hours of reading almost unrelated forum posts and trying random stuff, i stumbled across a solution. I have to delete all vertical edges that have smoothing problems and bridge the gap created between the horizontal ones, thus creating that specific poly all over again. now it works. I have no clue if its a bug or if i did something wrong, but this seems to be a good workaround for now.
