Stephan Dupont
Hi, Do you know a good way to convert 3ds files to C4D files? The goal would be to have no conflict of lighting, textures, cameras etc as there can be passing through fbx or obj formats. I heard that there was a plugin for that ? Thx a lot

You can simply open 3ds files in Cinema4D. They will carry cameras, lights and UVs, I'm not sure what else. What problems are you having with .3ds files? FBX is a newer, more robust format which may suit you better than 3ds. It depends on what you need to transfer.
Josef Wienerroither
There is also MaxToC4D , which is supposed to be better than plain FBX AFAIK it's still based on FBX but transport some additional metadata over using a xml data file Not tested it myself though

Stephan Dupont
Thank you for your answers. The problem is that a friend of mine is working on C4D and would like to recover my exported files from 3dsMax. The FBX, for example, does not export textures or lights. And the format obtained with MaxtoC4D does not open! Is it mandatory to have 3dsmax and c4d on the same pc for the plugin to work? Or does the plugin work if I only have 3dsMax on my pc and my friend only C4D on his? Thank you !
Ernest Burden III
...The FBX, for example, does not export textures or lights... What about: You can simply open 3ds files in Cinema4D. They will carry cameras, lights and UVs, I'm not sure what else... If it wasn't clear, I was talking about good old *.3ds files. They will come into Cinema as triangles, but they go back to quads easily with the C4D command for that.
Stephan Dupont
Thx Ernest ! I have tested only the last .3ds file (the most recent). And to your knowledge, textures are exported too with old .3ds formats ? You can't remember what .3ds file exactly is ? Thx very much !!
