Material mapping

Not entirely sure I follow, but if you're applying the material modifier, that just assigns a material ID to the object. If you have a Multi-sub material on that object, it would affect which of the materials within that the object displays. So no, it's not the same, you still need to apply a material from the editor, and if it's just a regular material (not multi-sub) then you shouldn't bother applying the modifier.

I rarely use that modifier unless there's a specific need as you can do that function by changing the ID of individual faces within an editable poly/mesh anyway.

^^ I thought this at first too and agree with Tom.

However if you mean Bitmap Mapping from UVW Mapping then all that does is match the bitmap UVWs exactly to the image you select. This is usually good for matching blueprints etc to the jpg dimensions.

The funny thing everybody understands something different :p

IMO what he is asking is about the UV coordinates that are in the material shader and the UV coordinates modifier that is in the modifier panel.

Both of them do the same thing, scale or adjust the size of a 2d image in to a 3D object, now the main difference is that the UVW modifier work per objects, so you can have the same texture applied to different objects and you can adjust or scale that texture to different sizes on different objects.

If you change the size or proportion inside the material itself (Shader) then this will apply to all the objects, but it will adjust accordingly with respect to the object modifier.

Clear a mud now? :p

Let us know.
