Frosty-

yes, DXF file exported from FormZ.

I had the scale factor set to 0.001 from FormZ, as the model was coming into C4D as really large.

With these settings the model has the right scale, but I noticed that there is a scale setting for C4D's DXF import as well - should I use this instead??

Thanks

I would say don't set any scaling from FormZ. Just verify which scale your model is in in FZ. If you are working 'architectural' then its inches (likely) or feet. Verify in the output options panel.

Set Cinema to the desired scale type--in this case feet. Upon import your inches will become feet, or 12x larger. So, either use a scale factor in Cinema's dxf import of 1/12 (.08333333333333) or be sure FormZ's unit type is also feet before export, then do a 1:1 import to C.

Remember--FormZ has smart scale, Cinema's are dumb. Meaning in FZ if you convert from meters to feet a 1 meter object will now scale as about 3 feet. In Cinema it will go from 1 meter to 1 foot (or 1 mile, or 1 mm).

What Ernest said ^^^ :D

As I use the EXACT same methodology as you, I will explain my process. Set units in FormZ to feet and inches and export with no transformation. Set Cinema's DXF import to 1:1 adn open the DXF. I then ignore units in Cinema.

I would very much like Maxon to add proper dimensioning and scaling features not to mention numerical and relative transformations.

Have you tested Cinema v9 for the VRML import? In 8x it always asumed incoming VRML files were in meters, even if they weren't. I will be needing to do some VRML importing to C from FZ this week--got an interesting set of renderings and possibly animation to crank out.

Is there a way to scale the size of the camera icon ??

Yes, Edub..you do exactly that..scale the size of the camera icon!

In other words select the Camera object in the Object Manager, choose the Scale tool, and just drag in the viewport till you get a more useable size.

There's probably something very wrong with the imported scale of your model though, if the camera size is really way out on creation. Your entire building may be coming in at something like 2mm long in Cinema!

The advice the others here have given should help you with file import scale, so the default camera size may not need adjusting once you get the model coming in right.

huh?... it doesn't seem to let me do that.

I'm not really having any luck using DXF import scale settings either... I stil have the huge cameras.

The scale of my building is correct. It's not like it's tiny. For example, if I move an object off the floor, it'll hit the ceiling at 11 ft, which is the actual height of the clng.

I'm really stumped here.

I'll try a couple of different import settings again, since I really need accurate measurements so I can do animated people walking through the building.

Thanks for all the suggestions though :)
