Viewport Lighting / Burnout

When working in max, I prefer to keep one of my viewports to "smooth and highlights" as opposed to wireFrame. So the one thing that has always evaded me was controlling the illumination in the viewport after all the lights are added to the scene.

I've messed around in the viewport configurations with 1/2/no default lights for illumination in the viewport. But I can never get rid of the burnout caused by too many lights in a final scene. Doesn't matter if your lights are on low settings, after enough you burnout the viewport.

I'm hoping that I will prove to be retarded by the time someone answers this one...... so any ideas?

thanks!

No my renderings are fine I'm just refering to the viewport. I've attached a final rendering and a screenshot from the viewport so you can see how bad it is. As for your cntrl-L, thanks for the shortcut key hint, but it didn't work, that accomplishes the same thing as opening the viewport configuration and turning on/off the default lighting which I've tried..... oh well back to where I started.

I finally solved my own problem after all this time . You can go into the Environment and Effects menu and turn down the "global lighting" value. And it accordinly darkens down the viewport to a workable level. This might affect other peoples renderings, but since I use Vray and override max's environment settings it doesn't affect my renderings at all. Hope this can help anyone else who's ever been frustrated by this wonderful quark!
