Conflict of interest???

Just curious how that would be a conflict of interest. Our peers come to the site, not our clients. And even if they did, as I own the site that leaves it pretty much open to do whatever I like. :) Besides where do you see Smoothe being plugged anymore than any other company? Any time Smoothe has been mentioned it's been to either answer a relavent question or based on the merits of the image that was done. Smoothe IS one of the best Visualization firms around.

BTW, I don't work for Smoothe anymore, I work for a new company that will be called Element 2. (I think that is the 2nd time I mentioned Element 2...ooops 3rd. More to come)

Which company do you work for? Looks like you are in the UK, so maybe one of Smoothe's competitors? :p

Amanda,

No there is no conflict. Plain and simple.... You should have followed Jeff's work of love for the industry for the last 6 o 7 years before making any comment. He is a totally dedicated person to the industry and to his 3D virtuoso friends. It takes a lot of unselfish dedication to do what he has done during all these years.

He is an honorable gentleman.... I respect his un-biased opinions.

Sincerely yours

Elliot Correa

PD:

Jeff no longer works for the company in England. Even then, there was no conflict. I have been following this site daily for many years. I have talked with Jeff on numerous occasions. I think you should have followed his tenure before making any comments like the ones you have made. This is a site of totally dedicated people who help and assist each other.

In many ways Jeff is the the spokesman of the group in front of the software developers and many other industries that interface with us.

MANY PEOPLE FEEL AND THINK LIKE ME, shame on you that on your first posting you dare to attack our group.

I agree with Elliot on this one... I would really like to know where you make such and accusation. Jeff has been running this site for a long time. I have witnessed it from the first day it was born to the large party that he hosted at Siggraph last year. His goal is to build a strong and respected community and share knowledge across the board.

Even myself, who does not even work in the same archviz community anymore, still enjoy stopping by a few times a day to see what is brewing. Never once did I feel that Jeff was pushing any product or company.

What leads you to make such an accusation?

But I guess since you only posted once, and you are from England, there must be a conflict in your interest.

Is there not a conflict of interest on this site as Jeff Mottle works for Smoothe in England and therefore there are loads of plugs for that company, just wondering.A x

Every post of mine has a plug for my company below my name. The fact is, just about every person here is a competitor to me. Which is why I love it. We are all friendly. The same is true in New York where most of the renderers know eachother, and many of us hang out together. We refer others for work, we even discuss our clients behind their backs. It's great to have so many great minds in one town, or one forum. And since CGA is a professional forum, most of us have jobs, and do real work for real clients that we post, and therefore 'plug'. Not a problem, not a conflict on any of our parts.

And Jeff started this site well before Smoothe hired him, and as was said, still owns it now that he has moved on to another company. No connection.

So welcome! Join right in!

Ernest,

I look at the forum several times a day. At one time I thought it was addictive and perhaps something wrong with me. Later on I realized that I learn a lot from seeing the posting of people like You, Fran, Chris, Alexander, Nisus, Strat, Mike, Devin, Alex, Tim, Fernando.... the artistic guys from the Phillipines, Argentina, Europe and Mexico and so many others......! It would be impossible to list them all. Some are even competitors in their own regions... This is a truly global forum linking some very serious enthusiasts on the leading edge of these technologies.

I really think we owe Jeff a big applause. He keeps us informed of the changes and advances. He gets the interviews and articles from the experts. Additionally, he has managed to create an atmosphere that resembles like family. I have seen competitors praising each other work on this site. Incredibly wonderful....!

Ernest, you summarized in a very calm manner our group culture. Your attitude of inviting Amanda to joins us is what has kept this little group bonded for so many years. Very good analysis.

MY APPLAUSE TO JEFF......!

Let us know when a trailer is released!

Well the trailer will be out soon, maybe end of february... not sure if I can tell you what I'm working on...

The copy read 'an AI jet who is brought aboard...' But that's before it's...I mean she, becomes self-aware. Haven't we all seen enough movies where self-aware computers do bad things? And why does becoming self-aware always cause bad things? I'm self-aware, and I do very few bad things.

It's a shame you can never reveal what you're working on Chris. I guess the movie industry is too secretive, protective. For example, if you're working on a movie about an astroid that is going to hit the Earth, you wouldn't want another movie with the same plot to come out within a few months. Or sharks giving up eating meat, or animated funny ants, or self-aware computers that do bad things...

Hey Chris,

What plane is that one....? I am familiar up to the F18, F22 and F16..... That's a new one.....!

You don't have to apologize for the Conflict.....!!!! Senior citizens don't have to apologize.... He he he I guess you are younger....

Ernest your analysis about the trailer is to profound for my simple humanity....! I am still trying to get Viz to work....! He he he

Hey Ernest, do you have enough snow up there... We are supposed to get some tonight. It is colder than normal in Atlanta. Two to four inches will paralyze this town.

i am not sure what your motive is by posting a statement like this. Smoothe is mentioned very few times on this board, and even if it was plugged a lot, i really don't see how it would be viewed as a conflict of interest. i am assuming that you were not even a troller on this bbs before making your first post. if you were, you would see the kind of community that is here, and the type of people that are here. the majority of us are employed or studying to the doing the same thing. we are here to share techniques, thoughts, interest, troubleshoot, and give peer reviews. the only times i ever recall smooth being mentioned was when someone asked for top UK firms, or the occasional post that where jeff would mention that was where he worked.

i believe this board was well established before jeff even went to work for Smoothe.

Well your first mistake is that you are thinking to much about it. This movie will not be an orginal movie... but it will be a kick ass ride...

Also keep in mind that I am not involved in any process of the movie making but getting the image on the screen. Not writing, directing, or acting. So don't hold me responsible for the movies that I work on if they are poor, and I would hold you guys responsible for doing renderings of bad architecture.

Oh, I completely understand that. I have never 'held you to account' for the those aspects of the projects beyond your scope of work. I am commenting on the project because its interesting.

And yes, I have rendered quite a lot of really BAD architecture over the years. One of my professional goals has always been to be in position to turn down the worst of it, and often I have been able to (I tell them I'm booked), but sometimes that check is going to come in handy.

But would it be completely boring to have a self-aware computer take it upon itself to solve all the world's human problems? Maybe just keep us on topic?

See... our professions are very similar. Sometimes you can pick the best projects to work on, and sometimes you have to work on movies like "The Core." I think the biggest difference it that most of the time my projects last 6 months to a year.
