I'm sure the primary difference is the level of pressure sensitivity. See below. Even in the Wacom tablets there are price differences between the different lines that have different levels of sensiitvity because they are aimed at very different markets. The intuos line is expensive because it is aimed at artists and as such has a very high level of pressure sensitivity. I'm been told by many architest that they really can't tell the difference between 500 levels and 1000 levels and they make do with the much cheaper Graphire model.

I also think it's a case of demand and supply. Wacom has captured the market and everyone want's it. So they can get away with a higher price.
