mauarduz
Here’s my pathetic story: I needed to upgrade from my Ge.force2 64 MB video card, so I found a Gainward Gainward FX Power Pack! Ultra/780 XP 256MB Professionalwith 256 MB, at 150 $us. Good deal I thought for my small budget. I thought what a great deal, these 256 MB will at least help me deal with the slowness of modelling with many objects on the screen. So I installed it and everything seems to be working very fine, I have a HL 7770 17” monitor and with my old card I could get more than 1024*768 resolution on the screen, specially comfortable to work with 3dsMAX. BUT NOW, I cannot get more than 1024*768, and it is frustrating, I tried to fool the machine and make it work with a standard monitor, but every time I restart, WIN XP pro, detects the monitor and gets me back to those settings again. So now I have this supposedly good card but I have such a small resolution I cannot work comfortably. Even with all those fancy utilities like Nview and the one for Gainward I still get the small screen What can I do? Thanx in advance
bryan lym
I have had this problem with my Wildcat video card because if you dig into the display properties (advanced button for the settings tab) you can change the monitor designation. Different monitors allow different resolutions and refresh rates. I had the wrong monitor selected. I can change my monitor designation there to my exact monitor or a similar one by same manufacturer and that changes the options that are available with respect to resolution and refresh rate. Of course changing the monitor is part of the 3DLabs display driver and your card may not have that option in its drivers. Also, it is likely your 17" monitor can't go any higher regardless of your video card and its drivers. I have several systems and I buy used Sun or Sony Trinitron (minimum 21") and run them either at 1600x1200 or 1280x1024, depending on the monitor and system capability. Hope that helps, Bryan
mauarduz
Part of my point is that if i am supposedly UPGRADING, it is ridiculous that i cannot get more resolution than 1024*768.....thats where i get frustrated with this card
David Barbarash
Try installing the latest Maxtreme drivers, they should have both resolution and refresh overrides for any monitor. Goodluck! David Barbarash
Greg Hess
David, Its not a quadro card unfortuantly. maur, Did you add/remove hardware your old video card BEFORE installing the new one? How bout removing the old video card drivers? If you missed these two steps, then the old drivers could be conflicting with your new card. Go to www.nvidia.com. Download the latest drivers for your video card. Do not install these drivers yet. Go to Add/remove software and remove any instances of old drivers you see. The computer should revert colors and ask to reboot. Once you've rebooted the screen will be in default mode, and you'll be able to click the driver exe you just downloaded. This should reset all your display settings, and install new drivers for your card, solving your problem.
mauarduz
Thank you very much Greg, Maybe I did it all too quickly because of the exitement hehe, I'll will try this tonight back home, because maxstreeme did not work for geforce FX. thanx again mauarduz
Greg Hess
mauarduz, Maxtreme is only for quadro cards. It won't work for the geforce FX. What I'm saying to download is the latest "video card" drivers.
mauarduz
yeah i got that one as soon as an ERROR window popped up saying "there's no workstaton driver here" so anyway as soon as i got home, i unnistalled everything that had to do with Nvidia, restarted again and again until the machine said found new hardware please select driver. so i did. and through this Nvidia wizard i could chose resolutions for a single CRT so i chose the next higher to 1024*768, and pressed preview, and nothing happened i was still at 800*600. this is so frustrating, i spent the few bucks i had on a supposed upgrade and here i am stuck on 1024*768 with a Geforce FX, my old Geforce 2 could gimme more than this. by the way, im on the 52.16 drivers, maybe someone knows a version that will allow me to actually see al my 3DS Max tools at the same time on the screen? there i go for not reading enough reviews before i buy thanx
Greg Hess
There isn't a single reason why the video card can't support the higher resolution. The card you purchased is capable of supporting resolutions far in exceedance of your current monitor. Heck its technically capable of supporting TWO displays at rediculous resolutions. The problem could most likely just be a mis configuration of your monitor drivers and/or your montiors refresh rate. What monitor do you have exactly so I can assist further? mauarduz
thank you so much Greg, the monitor is detected by windows as HL-7770A i believe this is manufactured by hiunday although its case says JBC, preety generic, anyway, as i stated before me previous Geforce II gave me the resolution that i wanted as long as i used a standard "plug & play" monitor in windows 2000 SP2. I tried to do the same but now windows XP pro always detects the HL-7770A monitor. Now, Nvidia software will allow me changes but it doesn't work propperly, since it will not preview the selected resoltion correctly etc. so it looks like theres a solution and any help will be greatly appreciated. mauarduz
Greg Hess
It sounds like your running your monitor out of hertz spec at the higher resolutions. The recommended resolution for your monitor is 1024x768 at 85 hertz. At 1280x1024 the max hertz supported is 60. So to run at 1280x1024, you'd have to first set your hertz to 60, then set your resolution to 1280x1024 and hit preview. I seriously DO NOT recommend running a monitor at 60 hertz. Its extremely bad for your eyes. Studies have show running a monitor below 85 hertz results in eye strain, fatigue, headaches, and in extreme situations, migrains. Not to mention contributing to poor vision.
