hyperthreading is overheating my system!!!??

Recommended Posts

my new processor came in this morning. It's a p4 3.06ghz 533fsb. After carefully installing the chip, and the new heat sink, and blowing out all the excess dust (with compressed air), I loaded up the machine and it worked like a charm....that is until I tried a test render to compare the stats with the wip I'm working on HERE . It was going SUPERFAST, and I got two buckets using vrayfree, but the moment it came across metal, it bogged down. Now the issue arose as all of a sudden as I got a temperature warning from my intel-monitor. Also, office2k starting installing somethin out of the blue after this message arose (3ds max 5.1 and vray were the only 2 apps running). I had to pop the cd in just to let it install...I let the render finish and it was indeed A LOT faster (8min and change with HT vs 15+ using a p4 2.2ghz 400fsb). However, the lil red warning icon in my start menu wouldn't go away till I rebooted, and it seemed to crash a lot of dll's...so I'm wondering if this is gonna be a serious problem with the circulation? I've already got 5 fans in there, and I NEVER had an overheating problem, so I'm guessing it has something to do with hyperthreading. Any advice?!

Here's what I've got

Intel® Desktop Board D845PEBT2 -onboard sound disabled

p4 3.06ghz at 533 fsb-HyperThreading enabled

2x512mb (1024mb total) ddr2700 (capable of 333mhz

2x 80gb WD 7200rpm IDE drives

Radeon 8500 128mb (dvi)

aardvark Direct pro Q10 (pro sound card)--I do composing and recording as well on this system.

Win XP Pro

3ds max 5.1, and VrayFree

Well, it might be the 333 Mhz memory you have, this tends to be a bit unstable with hyper threading.. I also have a similar system, but I have no heating problems... but I do have 400 Mhz memory installed... 5 fans??? wow... thats a lot.. I only have one cooler on my CPU and one in my power supply... It also could be your two hardrives, but as you said before, you had no problems before...

I don't use any software to monitor my temps...

as I'm rendering right now (i know the time, but I'm meeting the head of Berkeley's Grad dept on thursday so i need this done asap, I have the side of my case open, and using intel active monitor, the processor zone is @ 64c, system zone 1 is @ 40, system zone 2 is at 37, system fan 1 is @ 2723, and fan 2 is @ 1515...guess it doesn't pick up the fans that are built in to the case...I read on intel's site that I might need a new p4 3+ghz certified case to allow proper ventilation. I don't mind leaving the case open now, but since I have a realy realy REALY nosy cat, I'd prefer to have a closed case (for the cat's and the comp's safety)...GREG, you're the expert on this: any advice?

by the way, it's rendering a file with vray free...

64C???

Daaamn.

Thats still well within Intel specifications...but way outta my personal ones.

The Dual 2.8C (HT) Xeon system I run stays in the low 40C's under load.

And thats with two processors, 2 gigs of ram, a quadro 980XGL, and a 460 Watt PSU.

I'd shoot for something in the mid 40's temp wise.

Is the system loud? Silent? Are all the fans spinning?

Quickest and simpliest fix is to find a box fan, or oscillating fan, and set it up about 3-4 feet away from the open case, blowing in.

This will solve most temp problems long enough to find a more perm solution.

It will also tell you where the problem lies.

1) If the temp drops 10C or more (even around 8C or above) its usually a case airflow problem. The air isn't being exhausted from the case fast enough, and its heating up the processor.

2) If the temp barely changes at all...Then it could be a misaligned heatsink and/or bad application of grease.

I've never seen a bad temp off a stock intel hsf myself, but then I usually don't deal with the 3.06's since their known to be the hottest (and expensive to boot).

If the heatsink is screwy, you can try remounting it. If that doesn't work, and you want to reduce case noise...

The Zalman CNPS7000-Cu rules.

For case fans...I usually go with Adjustable rpm ones, any company. Being able to adjust the rpm's allows for noise tweakage. Very swank.

Power supply recommendations would be Antec Truepower's...I'd go with the midrange...(the 330 watt is the first grade of the truepower..I'd tell ya the mid range in wattage, but my intraweb is being $#@&ed by some upset monkeys.

Before buying anything...

1) Make sure to do the ghetto solution.

2) Run memtest86 http://www.memtest86.com

well, the only thing I did was open a side panel and within 20seconds, the temperature readings dropped about 20 degrees. While unscrewing the case, I noticed how hot the damn thing got!!!

One of my chief concerns lies in that I use the computer to record, and thus I can't have a) an open case, and b) a rattling case.

None the less, I'll try putting a fan next to it and see how cool the thingwill get. Though I suspect that at the least, I'll need that zalman fan, and maybe a case.

thanks again for the help

20 F or 20C?

What was the temp before you took off the case? Was it 60 after you took the case off?

If so, then the chip was most likely throttling down to prevent cpu damage.

Its definitely a case airflow issue.

What exhaust fans are running? Where is the psu located?

If your looking for a cheap effective case, check out the antec/chieftech towers. They also look pretty snazzy and come in a variety of colors.
