Dell

Recommended Posts

I have a refurbished Dell 530 2.2, but have had several single processor Dell's.

Advantages (that I've seen - and this is mostly aimed at the business side, not the home side, but all workstations are on the business side):

1. Reliable

2. Fast service (The fan went bad, or at least made bad noises, and it was replaced in less than 24 hours, tech guy and all, and I live in the woods)

3. Very good tech support (on the business side, on the home side it has gone down hill)

4. Competitive prices, if not simply cheap

(My workstation came like new, without a scratch)

5. They support everything that goes with it, and I've had their tech support help with many things that they really shouldn't have, like buying rdram off ebay instead of from them.

Disadvantates:

1. Not much flexibility - you get what they spec and they are typically a little behind with things like RAM, but usually no big deal

2. Personally, I'd like to support a custom boutique-type company, but there isn't one that offers all that Dell does (like laptops)

3. Some of the smaller companies seem to be able to produce machines that are a little faster, at the same price - I am guessing it's that they are more nimble when purchasing pieces

That's about it. I still stick with Dell, if only because I can ask about many computers with one phone call.
