aflack
I have been working on an image for a while now and i rendered it over night. When I came in this morning it had crashed but rendered the image when I try and go into the file it comes up with an error saying "3D studio Max can-not open this file"! Can anyone help me and tell me how I can get into the file to carry on working on it. The last back-up I made was last Friday which I know is terrible and loads has changed since then. Thanks for your help.
JamesTaylor
If part of the geometry has become corrupt it may cause the file not to open. This may not be the case but its always worthh checking. To do so, open a new file then under file menu choose merge, import the scene elements from the original file in managable chunks, i.e geomerty in one go, lights in another. If there is corrupt geometry the merging of it will crash the scene again, so pay attention to which section you're bring across at the time This way if there corrupt geometry or scene elements you should be able to figure out what is causing the problem and just replace that element or elements. Good luck, hope this helps James
Eric
Do you have the autosave feature turned on? If so, it will save a copy to a location you specify, or its default location. I believe it's the Autoback folder inside the max directory by default. I'm not sure if it changes the extension of the backup copy, but if it does, simply rename it to .max and you should be good to go. On thing you will probably want to do is start double saving your work. When I'm ready to save, I'll do a normal save (to the current file name), then do a save as, and click the "+" sign next to the filename in the save as dialog box. This puts an incremental "01, 02, 03, 04..." number at the end of the file name. This way, you always have recent backups, and if it crashes, you only loose a few minutes worth of work. mbr
Yes, get in the habbit of saving numerous versions. I save about 10-20 new models per day/per project.
aflack
I managed to get it back in the end using the merge tool. Will start saving multipul copies of the files. Does anyone else find that Max crashes quite a lot, normally a couple of times a day?
JamesTaylor
Generally find max stable. have had periods in the past when max has crashed a lot tho. never managed to put my finger on what it is tho. could be down to modelled geometry / scene etc. or maybe processes running on the machine at the time i.e background tasks.... who knows....just be prepared for it!!
