DrunkenMonkey
Hi all So i am doing my dissertation on Architecture in computer games, and thought why not get other peoples opinions. The obvious choices to look at are things like Project gotham, Ico, Halo 1 & 2, The Sims and Sim City. Are theyre any other obvious ones? or do people have an opinion on this subject. cheers

IC
You don't know HalfLife? Better do some more research before you do your dissertation. Commonly regarded as one of the best PC games ever.

DrunkenMonkey
Does good architecture in a game, help you with a sence of place within a game. Does it make u more involved and make the environment more real. Does poor level design in an architectural sence make a game less appealing? Are computer games the cultural influence of the 21st century where as before we had novels and film?

Finster
You might look at some of the MMORPG type games. While the architectural graphics in them aren't as polished as some of the games mentioned here, they have a unique fact in that they typically have more player control and interaction on design/layout. In Shadowbane, you could build your own towns/cities with various types of utility buildings and defensive walls/gates/towers. There were also different architectural "sets"; middle ages, elven, viking, desert, etc. In A Tale in the Desert (based on Ancient Egypt), players have full control over the design of their compound. There are 8+ premade layouts, but then with the proper building materials you can change floorplans, wall type, columns, doors, etc. There is also an architectural tract that you can follow as a player, although most of the projects right now are just gathering resources to build various types of obelisks (sp?).
