Hi all

So i am doing my dissertation on Architecture in computer games, and thought why not get other peoples opinions.

The obvious choices to look at are things like Project gotham, Ico, Halo 1 & 2,

The Sims and Sim City & Half-Life

Are theyre any other obvious ones? or do people have an opinion on this subject?

Does architecture in computer games give a sence of place?

cheers

I'd look back to the Dungeon and Dragons and some of the video games that were mostly text. That's where descriptions of space and architecture begain.

Can it give a sense of place? Sure, but only in rare situations for now. Interactive 3D (that's with glasses on) is pretty amazing. We are using some here (via a program called Eon, using 2 projectors). But it's a ways off for the regular consumer and it's still awakward at some points.

It'll be there in the next few years, once technology makes another leap. It'll be exciting to watch.

The village in Syberia 1 was in superb art deco style. The university was a majestic piece of architecture, with the interior atrium and its library and the Russian resort had an exact retro dacha look. Ok, syberia II takes place mostly in fantastic worlds, but I think that the first part is a tribute to old architecture styles and the way their materials age and deteriorate.

Take a look at Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic 1 and 2. This might sound super silly, but I totaly love the architecture on Dantooienenene (however the heck you spell it). I am seriously considering basing my bedroom's remodel on the look in that game. Yea, I know I am an nerd. :)

Either way, the different worlds in that game have very distinct and some quite nice looking architecture.
