Messed up laptop display?....

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

OK, back to my laptop rant again :) My screen seems to f*ck up now and again and seem to be gradually worsening. Like today, I used my laptop for 2 hours just got e-mail / internet ... then my display just deteriorates. This has happened quite a few times... its like everything goes to low resolution, less colours, things that are meant to be shown in colour become black etc. See following image:

Anyone know what could be causing this?

Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop

Windows 2000 SP3

512 RAM,

Pentium 3, 866MHz ....

Here is my driver info for video:

Graphics Processor: GeForce2 Go

Bus Type: AGP

BIOS Version: 3.11.01.44.23

On-Board Memory: 16MB

IRQ: 9

TV Encoder Type: Chrontel 7007

Display Driver: nv4_disp.dll Version: 6.13.10.2964

(same version for all other files related to video)

Hardware Acceleration is set to Full.

Mike,

Its a Dell...and its a laptop.

You have two choices. You can utilize your warranty. (They'll usually come over within a day or two). Or take the thing apart yourself and try to fix it.

I usually just recommend going the dell route. Its a pain, but if they can't figure it out, they'll pretty much replace everything inside the laptop. Which means you'll get newer revisions of hardware...always a good thing :) .

No one seen this funkyness happen before?

Yes. I've seen it. Happened when someone at work jarred the laptop rather severely.

One of two things can be done. You can check to see if that cable is just loose now. (instructions on dells site).

Or you can see how much it is for a new display. (Would be around 800-1000 USD...my guess).

I'd suggest going on dell sites and finding all the pdf's on how to take the laptop apart. Check all connections and make sure all the screws are firmly fastened.

I'd also take the time (before opening the laptop) to flush out the video card drivers, and try a different set.

Note: laptop OS's are monkeyed with by Dell (and other companies, I would guess) so a stock video driver may not work. Be sure it comes from Dell.
