dual amd sytem, please help :-)

Recommended Posts

i´m no hardware crack and i hope you guys can help me. i want to setup a new renderslave for my home. i already have a dualsystem that works great (asus a7m266-d with two XP (!!) 1800). for the second one i wanted to buy a msi or tyan board with new XP cpu´s, no MP´s. now i have heard, that the new XP cpu´s (higher than xp1900) are not able to run together in a dual board. is that right ? i have searched in the net, but there a many diffrent suggestions. and what about the frontside bus ? higher cpu´s than xp2400 run with 300 o 333. as i now it´s not possible to run them in a board with a 266 bus. is that right ? so confusing for a hardware amateur like me

i know that a lot of people here work with a dual amd system, so i hope that someone can tell me somethings at first hand.

Use MP chips.

The original Dual AMD boards could use Dual XP's...then Dual XP's with a little hacking...but it eventually got to the point where it actually takes some work getting them to work in a SMP config.

Easiest solution. Just buy some MP's. You'll get support up to 2800+, and they'll work on your board without having to worry about bridge gaping, bios hacking, or soldering.

yeah, go for the MPs. Just go with an amount you are willing to spend and fill it with MPs.

You will lose a few minutes a month in rendering time, but gain a lot more for constantly taking your XPs out and redoing the bridges... or just other risks and games.

I just bought 2 XPs (2100+ TB b core) to replace my 1.2 MPs and by the time I got them I decided to upgrade one of the older 1600+ and build another new one instead of the risking frying them both and losing my money.
