CRD
OK, I need some of this simplified for me a bit. How much of a difference will I see when I run Max 6 on a 64-bit capable AMD Opteron vs a regular old 32-bit Intel P4? To quote the article, “Discreet software on the AMD64 platform will allow our 3-D artists and game developers to run a variety of 32-bit applications with the ability to tap 64-bit power as needed,” When does Max "tap the 64-bit power"? I guess are there only certain operations which could take advantage of the 64-bits? Like only rendering and not modeling? As a side question, I read that Mental Ray is capable of using 64-bit operations. If MR is integrated in Max6, but it's the only part that uses 64-bit, is there marketing department saying that Max6 can use 64-bit? The bottom line for me is that I'm probably going to upgrade to Max6, so do I need to run out and get a dual Opteron to really kick arse? Or is my dual 2.4 p4 close enough? Thanks Colin
Jeff Mottle
To translate that article I can do it in one sentence: "Max 6 32 bit has been tested and works on the 64 bit AMD chip. Buy one now so you can take of advantage of it when MAX 6 64 bit is released" Any speed increase you see would be as a result of it being the newest chip, not beucase it's 64bit. Read my SIGGRAPH review that I posted a few days ago and see the AMD section.
