Jonny English
I have a Dell Precision 530 with a 2GHz Xeon processor and a spare slot. I would like to upgrade my processor to a more powerful one and get a second chip at the same time, does anyone know how I can tell which ones my computer can accept and what is the maximum speed I could put in. Any help would be very appreciated.
Allen
Log onto Dell's website with your service code that's located somewhere on your case. Follow the links for upgrades for that particular model/motherboard. You don't have to buy it from them - but this is the best way I've found to insure what I'm purchasing will be compatible to the workstation. Jonny English
I bought the computer as reconditioned, therefore it doesn't have a Dell Service Code. Any other ideas???
Allen
Hmmmm. Not sure. I went to Dell's web site - searched for processor upgrades. Had no luck there. Short of a owners book - which you might be able to find on the dell site - I'm stuck. As a side thought, one would think a serial number or code on the existing chip would give a clue of it's front-side bus/speed/type - but I do not know that for certain. Sorry. Wish I could help more.
Crazy Homeless Guy
crack the case open, and see if you can find any information on your motherboard. manufacturer/serial no. the info on the existing chip is worthless, since the motherboard is adapted to work with the chip, not the chip to work with the motherboard. or for a slightly easier route.... install Fresh Diagnose, and gather the info on your motherboard, do a search of the companies website, and it will tell you what processors are exceptable. http://www.freshdevices.com for instance, it tells me i have a Micro-Star 6A69SM4A with a Intel 850 (Tehama) Chipset. now I can find a processor to upgrade to that will be excepted by this board.
