Hey guys

i can say i have a little problem. i'm using 3ds max 6 and yesterday i close and save my file before going to sleep and this morning....surprise

I can't open my file anymore....i try also the merge tool but doesn't work.

Is there any possibility to open the file in an other way because i need this file for a presentation at the end of the week and i don't want to restart it.

i hope it's possible otherwise i will not sleep this night :(

tx

You may think I am crazy, but since I lost a week's work 2 years ago, every day I back up my day's work in a different computer, and every week or so I update a dvd-rw with my working projects. You know, we learn from every single mistake. cheers

What do you mean there is nothing? Doesn't exist an autobackup folder or in the folder don't exist autobackups? Don't search for a backup with the name of your file but look if there is autoback1, autoback2 and autoback3.

Otherwise, if you didn't save at list an earlier version of your file, I don't know any way to restore a crashed file. I 'm sorry. Never save only one copy, at list two all the time while you 're working..

I mean there are files in the autobackup folder but not the one i'm searching for i really don't know why .

Anyway i have an older version of my file so i will restart with that one....but informatic will always stay a mistery for me....

The experience is the sum of all the silly things we do.....

tx to all of you for your advices.

Nice to see there are peoples always ready to help

Make sure your C drive is not full. I had a similar problem (stupid, I know) a few days ago. I could open files from a few weeks ago, but not the current ones. The reason was that my C drive was too full. I deleted a few gigs of space, no more problems.

Check autoback up ( Mine is set to save 20 + times),

if nothing is saved on backup try merging compontents alittle at a time (5 objects or so at a time), instead of mergin the whole file. I find usually there is just one object/thing that screws everything up, So the trick is to merge everything that works and then re-do the one thing that doesnt. Its not a fast process, but Its faster then redoing everything. Not a full solution but it works for me.

the most comun problem whit that is that one of your objets have the problem you need to merge one objet at a time until you detect which object have the problem (the objet that crash max wen you mergeit) then you merge all the objets exept the one whit the error that shold be work

  • 3 months later...

i definitely agree with sir bugga guy here, if no data were saved in the autoback files. Try merging 3-5 objects at a time. it a pain in the as* redoing the whole thing. It happened to me before, and that's what i did.

Having a similar problem opening max7 files in viz4, though my autobak is fine. When opening a max file i get "Unknown class no stand in: blah, blah." Followed by a list of missing dll's. Sombody elses model, has some vray material type.

tryed merging objects individually from file, same as above.

tryed merging objects from autobak, same as above.

export as .3ds, works but drops all my texture mapping. painful.

have heard .obj file types are better than .3ds. but viz dosnt import this file type.

any ideas??

cheers

Too bad that lionel cant merge as he stated in his first post... The file is corrupt... What I do to avoid these kind of problems is to save with increment so every time I save a file max adds a number at the end of the filename. And I set my autobackup at 5 or 10 minutes. BTW they should be in your c:\3dsmax6\autoback directory.

As to loading max7 files into viz4... its NOT possible, the versions are NOT compatible. You could use the BFF script (Back From Five but now its Bobo's File Format). The only thing is you have to run the script in max7. Try to get a demo version of max7 and you should be fine in converting...
