proces2
i looked into some pricing at boxxtech for a machine under $2000 (trying to keep the price around 1800). what i found was right around $1900: AthlonXP 2200+ with 1gb RAM or Pentium 4 2.4ghz with 1gb RAM then i looked at sys.com to check prices. for about the same price, i can get a DUAL AMD 2200+ computer with 1gb RAM. can someone explain why there would be a descrepancy in price like that? is the performance on the boxxtech that much superior to other machines? anyone familiar with sys machines?(i have actually bought a dual machine there and it runs fine without any problems - but i don't know if it is setup to run at its full potential). thanks in advance. sean
David Knourek
If your concerned about the noise on a dual AMD then think about using like a SLK800 from Thermalright with a 80mm Panaflow Medium flow fans and all you will hear is just a wisper from them. As long as the HSF will fit on your mobo. Just a thought, -dave
Greg Hess
Other fan choices include... Adjustable rpm 80mm's (enermax or YS-tech) Coolermaster 4 LED Rifle Bearing 80mm (32 CFM/25db) Any 80mm fan producing 30 or higher CFM. The panflo's are quite nice , just can be expensive depending on where your located. The Coolermasters go for around 6 bucks each, I've seen panflo's as high as 14. bigcahunak
Never heard about sys.com, so I'm checking them right now... OK, first I see that sys.com default video card is matrox G450, which personally I like a lot, but it s**ks in 3d. Regardless to its performance, it is a very cheap nowadays ($50+-) which might be that price deference between sys and boxx. when you compare machines setup (and especially prices) you have to take all hardware under account. I cant see for any reason for proces to be much different if all parts are more or less matching. Performance between the two companies should also be the same (they only put parts together) However, and this is most important to a user like yourself who doesn't know his way with hardware components and setting them up, is the support. Expect things to go wrong, and they will! You want to have someone to be there, and not only when you send your credit card numbers over... Just to end with a personal recomendation: try to make the effort and get a dual (its the speed, the flawlessness things work, the multitasking, and the feedback you get from the machine... its simply double...) Hope my tips will help. Good luck. [ April 16, 2003, 12:25 AM: Message edited by: bigcahunak ]
proces2
i did get the components to match up as close as possible. each system had a nvidia quadro4 64MB video card. i do prefer the dualies as well. though, the noise (fans) can just drive me crazy some times! thanks for the pointers. sean

Brian Cassil
Hey Chris, that sounds almost exactly like what I am in the market for as well. Could you post or e-mail me some more specific data on what you ordered like exactly which motherboard, what ram, etc. Also, I will not be personally be putting it together, the guy who will has lots of experience building desktop systems but not necessarily for 3D. Is there any advice for him that may be specific to putting together and configuring a 3D system?
