interiors vs exteriors

Hi

I'm starting to get interior modeling and rendering jobs from a client, and i need tips on how much to charge them because i never did "interiors only" projects, i made a couple before but as part of a presentation with exteriors as well. What do you think should be the cost of an interior compared with an exterior, is there at least a general rule, do they usually cost more, less?. Im confused because on one hand, interiors can be more complex..furniture, lights, objects, etc. but on the other hand i dont know if its reasonable that, for example, the interior of a living/dining room be more expensive more than the exterior of the whole house.

Thanks

I usually charge more for interiors, but of course it will always depend on model complexity and lighting & material conditions.

When doing interiors, i usually have to model specific furniture pieces based off of photos only. That can take a fair amount of time by itself.

Also, interior rendering times are much higher than exteriors because I do so much post-production of exteriors with landscaping. There isn't really an easy way to fake interiors, so you have to model everything, and you suffer the waiting time.

Plus, i've found that there is a lot more coordination of interiors involved than exteriors.

There can never be a rule for it though, because there do exist such things as simple interiors, and very complex exteriors.

U see Marq - two people - three opinions...

I say take a look at the plans, calculate you time acording to the quality demands and price it just the way you are used to. Interior, exterior... its all modeling + materials + light + render + PS

If I asked you guys to work 10 hours on an iterior model would you charge any different than working 10 hours on an exterior one...?

Calc your time man, its all about your time.

exactly.

i usually figure 4 days for an interior, and 4 days for an exterior for my average projects. so we usually charge about teh same for interior/exterior.

the interiors may take longer than the exteriors at first, but once you start to build your interior texture and model libraries things will speed up. it will also take a handful of projects until you get a feel for lighting interiors. lighting an exterior is a walk in the park compared to an interior.

Thanks for all replies, and yes, absolutely, a lot fo different opinions, which i expected because ive been reading previous threads about fees and it is really a difficult issue, but it was very helpful because now i have at least a general idea about this. I think based on the time it takes to make both interiors and exteriors, in my case i´ll have to charge about the same.

  • 2 weeks later...

this is for all you guys : why dont u guys give an approximate range of fees charged in your respective currencies in your respective locales for doing an interior view of a large bedroom with standard furniture like a master bed, wardrobe, dressing table , etc .. so we can get a good comparative .. quality considered will be the best and deadline is like say four days .. so let the quot begin ..
