Chrome material problem

I'm having a problem with a chrome material applied to this stool that I modeled (which took me forever!). The material on the cylindrical base of the stool is the exact same as that on the thin part surrounding the stool - the part that looks jet black in the renders. I've double checked that it is actually the same material using select by material. So I don't think that it's the material or the vray settings because it comes out fine on the stool's base. Is it a problem with lighting, the object settings, maybe with the model? I have no idea and would really appreciate any help. I really don't want to throw out the stool, but it's pretty useless to me if I can't stop a part that's supposed to be chromish from coming out black. In case it helps, the material is just a standard max material with a multilayered shader (first specular 400, glossiness 90; second specular 30, glossiness 25) with a black diffuse colour and 80% reflection of a vray map with no adjusted settings.

Hi Dennis,

I've figured it out. Like I though it wasn't a problem with the actual material, but it was brutally obvious. I had most of the chair's normals flipped so that it didn't really matter what material I had on it. I'm undergoing the very painful process now of trying to fix it. Thanks for sending the materials though. I hope you don't mind if I continue to use some of them.

Evan,

It's good to know that it worked out. Hey listen, I saw the chair and read that you had a hard time to model it. I'm always busy modelling assets while not 'in' a project so I will do that chair for you, it's a copple of minutes work. I like the shape so somewhere today I'll mail you the maxfile. Do with it what you want, same counts for the matlib. (Iwill use that chair too in the future though).

Ishpal,

the link works again and perhaps there are some more collegues who want to have the compilation. It's just a 'deetee' matlib and it's all over the web but maybe some people don't know it's there.

Take care guys,

Dennis

Hi Dennis,

That's really cool of you to volunteer to model the chair. "A couple minutes" is pretty impressive. My modeling skills are terrible, the chair was actually supposed to be practice, but then it turned into a bit of a mess, as halfway through i usually end up guessing. Once you get yours done, do you mind sharing how you did it. For mine, I made the metal rim by making splines, outlining them, extruding and then joining. For the wood I just extruded the appropriate polygons of the spline across, and the base was the easy part. Any tips would be very useful as it's definitely something that I want to get better at.

Hi Evan,

I'll add some screenshots, it's finished tomorrownoon, in vray .mats. The metal rim is way more easy to do, lofting is the key here. Just draw a spline, model it in the right shape, fillet here and there and loft a circle. The seat and stand pretty much speaks for themselves. Consider it done, okay? :D

Take care,

Dennis

Thanks so much Dennis,

You've really been helpful! Attached is the final version of my stool (not as clean as yours, but I think I like the cross-section of the rim as rectangular). Feel free to use it if you want and the same goes for everyone else.

Evan

PS It was much much faster with lofting this time (around 30 mins)

Dennis & Evan- hello 2 u both!

Dennis- arent u both working with vray free? i thought u did. even so i still know some people w vray free that are able 2 open mat libs that i cant.

now Evan- im not sure how its supposed 2 help me

the truth of the matter i tried 2 open the exact same file (vray materials01)from evermotion a while ago (which was 1 of my grand failures)

so that didnt solve my problem unfortunatly. any other ideas??

Hi On,

I don't have a clue why your friends vray 'free' actually do can open up the material libraries. The only thing that could be possible is that you're missing some dll's in the max-root and plugin folder otherwise it's resitricted to use matlibs in the free version..

I don't work with vray anymore since I have a new network so I can not test it for you. I myself am about to pick up a new set of Brazil r/s instead of vray because of the great experiences with Splutterfish in the past. Even my 4000px Brazil renderings are outsourced to a great renderfarm (respower) up till this day so I'm still renderer-less. I'm sure that if you start a thread about this issue, there are usually some friendly people to help you out.

Good luck with it.
