John Giummarra
Now i am stuck again. I want to thank everyone for there insight into how to get over the fear of diving in. Well i have done it. I have created hundreds of buildings i have them all named and now the city looks they way i invisioned it as a skyline. The problem is that i zoom in and they are just plain walls. no windows. no walkways between buildings or balconies. The streets are just the grey plane object i used for the base. My question would be how do i begin taking a . http://www.xsquisitedesigns.com/maxposts.htm How do i create windows and stuff without going the pain of stick figuring them together? IC
A quick way to do windows/detail would be to use textures. A black and white version of the texture can be used for specular/reflection maps. Modelling would be better but it would take time and really raise the poly count and render times. What was the end of the sentence you didn't finish? John Giummarra
I want to know how to beging taking the next step by creating the windows and doors and decorations that will adorn these structures. what is the texture thing you are speaking of. if you take a look at what i have started you will see that i am very new to 3ds max
IC
A texture is the how you apply surfacing and detail to an object without increasing the polygons. You apply materials to the polygons to give them the appearance you are after. For a full panel of windows you can create an image in photoshop(or whatever you use) which looks like the frame grid and the glass. Then, by using the same image, you create a greyscale version with the whiter areas the parts that stick out more. You then use this as the bump map. I won't go any further as it's quite complicated untill you grasp it. You'll find much more info in your help files or tutorials.
Tommy L
Looks like your starting out on a fairly complex mission. I would try a few tutorials first, the old crawling before walking proverb comes to mind. Good luck
John Giummarra
You are probably right. But the thing is that i have a solid idea and believe that the time it will take to learn on smaller projects might as well be spend on learning how to master the idea. can you give me suggestions on my work done so far ?
