MJL Imaging
hello all! I've looked around for a while on edit mesh stuff and can't seem to find anything on sub-object editing of meshes. What I'm looking for in particular is how to select a single face and divide it into vertical or horizontal segments or even both. That can be done, can't it? What I'm trying to do is model a garage door and and the center panel of each door is divided. Like a carriage house type garage door. once i'm done with it, I'll put the file up for anyone to use if need be.
Chad Warner
Check out Smoke3d's tutorials: http://www.cgarchitect.com/resources/tutorials/smoke3d/default.asp
JHalton
You wanna be in Poly mode, select the object and go to Slice Plane. This can be rotated and moved anywhere you want and then hit slice. It cuts stuff up. Correct me if I'm wrong guys.
MJL Imaging
Thanks for the help. Here's the file no textures or anything, just thought it might be useful for someone to save some time if they needed it. If anyone's interested. http://www.mjl-imaging.com/maxfiles/ Regards! JHalton
Nice one. Nice model. Did you use the slice plane tool?
MJL Imaging
No, no slice plane method. I used the method from the tutorial link above. It worked well. When I started modeling it before this post, I tried using edit mesh, then slice plane, and it created a bunch of somewhat random and useless vertexes. I started by creating a box, with 3 by 3 divided segments. I then converted it to an Editable Poly. then connected edges with 6 divisions took the new vertical edges, chamfered and extruded them. It worked out real well. Thanks for the help with this guys, I like to learn new methods of creating things!
maxit
What I usually do for adding segments is after turning the object into Editable Poly, I select the opposite edges and click on Connect. If you use the numeric panel of the Connect, you can choose the number of segments. And then in Vertex mode you move the vertices to the desired position. By using this method I only create polygons where I need them. this is applicable in 3dsmax V6&7. Hope this helps
