Iain Denby
Hi guys I hope someone can shed some light on this problem. Just got my new Dual Xeon 3gb system, which is amaizing as you can imagine. However, I worked on the thing all day and noticed a problem starting around lunchtime. Every 2-3 minutes, when you are working in a program, it seems to 'hold it's breath'or freezes for about 3 seconds and then continue back into action with a small 'click' from inside the CPU. It's been doing it in Viz and Word. I've eliminated the transmitter for the mouse. You can hear the CPU 'click' when left alone too. I think, maybe it's got worse as the day has gone on. The guys who put it together told me because of noise, they put fans for a 2.8 processor on th chips, but had been told from Intel that this is OK if you have the right Coolmaster case. Could this be a overheating problem?
Crazy Homeless Guy
I am not a hardware expert by any means. ...but whenever I hear clicking inside my box that is a sign for me to back up all my files as quickly as possible because my hard drive is about to die. I learned my lesson about backing up files the hard way. Twice.
David Knourek
Im with Crazy Homeless Guy, odds are the clicks you are hearing are probably the hard drives and if the "techs" where you bought the system are telling you that its the CPU then I would be tempted to go else where for hardware and tech support. Also make sure all your system drivers are up to date and maby check with someone else that you trust to look at the machine to make sure its setup properly (hardware and software). As Ive seen to many times that mistakes can hapen during asembly, but like I said it could be as simple as a bad drive even though its new. just my $.02 -dave
Greg Hess
1) Drivers as stated. For a Xeon you need. a) Intel INF drivers b) Intel Application Accelerator drivers. If either of those are missing, performance will be sluggish. Remember to run Windows XP with the lastest updates. (Or windows 2000 server). If your worried about processor heat, check the heat in the bios upon booting. (Press F2, Del, F1, or Tab when the initial bios boot screen comes up, go to hardware monitor). My 2.8's are running around 37-38C idle. Also this could be indiciative of ram errors. Because your ram is most likely ECC, it would be correcting the error, causing a slight pause. Run www.memtest86.com with ECC DISABLED and see if any errors are present. Also download and run sisoft sandra (do a burn in test) to watch the temps over time, and help diagnose stability problems. Iain Denby
Thanks Gregg Just checked my Bios after CPU has been on for 6 hours and idle for about 1 hour. Ambiance 39C CPU1 52C CPU2 44C Fan1 5818rpm Fan2 5818rpm
Iain Denby
Yesterday, no problems. But imediateley this morning I have the 'pauses', and 'clicks', so it can't be a heat problem. So if it's a ram error problem as you suggested Gregg, is it just a case of swapping them?
Greg Hess
Run the tests and programs I suggested. If you get a ram error, remove dimms until you've tested each one individually. When you find the bad one, replace it. Swapping position of bad dimms won't solve the problem.
Iain Denby
Found the problem. The main Hard drive (seagate 120 GB) was very ill and is now dead! Apparently, Couldn't ghost the info over onto a new one because of bad blocks etc, so having to do a clean install on a new hard drive. It lasted a week! What do you expect for £5000!
