DennisHolland
Hi all, here's a recently finished assignment, client was pleased with the result as it is now. Still,...I'm not quite confident before placing it in my portfolio, so I've decided to give it an overhaul and go for a finetuning of the 'plastic' things in it like the streetsurface, interiors within' the appartments, people, sky etc. and little add-ons that makes this render more different, but not client-friendly anymore, if you know what I mean...just making it all more realistic. Therefore, I know what to do but any good suggestions would be great. Critiques of the work as it is now are also very welcome... Dennis
Brian Cassil
All the things you mentioned are exactly what is needed here. I would also crop the bottom of the image up closer to the planter on the right.
evanmoses
the bottom third of the image looks a little flat and takes away from the building. But I'm sure cropping and the changes you mentioned would fix it.
Bugga_Guy
First of all good job on the rendering.. I quite like the building, however the thing that bothers me most is the road and side walks - its too clean and perfect. You should apply some tree shadows/some noise- maybe a light hint of tire treads on the pavement. I did a quick 5 min fix in photoshop, I hope you don't mind. I added a tree shadow skewed it and brought down opacity to 25%. I added streaks using the dodge tool around the pavement and sidewalk and around the building (to further enhance the shadow) and finally added a little bit of lens blur to give it depth. DennisHolland
Thanks Brian, and of course all others... the treeshadow in the front is a good solution. (when I try to have only a shadow hitting a surface, I always get a nasty lighting with it. Do you have the clue for me to just have the shadow, in max?) That's a good way to leave the image as it is without cropping up. I like the distance and it keeps a door open for a lot of clutter (leaves, some dirt, a drain?) combined with the shadows it will break it up beautifully... Cracking up and age the road is allready in my planning, wanna do that in max as well, maybe with a blendmap or just an aged-asphalt texture and uv-map it correctly. The white lines are gonna have an opacitymap to let 'm look damaged here and there. I'll see...the pavers are also very dominant, they are that colour for real down at the constr. site. I will change it in Dutch old-grey pavers instead, maybe customly made out of chamfered boxes and give some a twist. The trees, I didn't pick 'm ;-) I will change them into winterstyle (no leaves at all) or some young slim autumn-trees with only a few leaves left. The point is, I want to do all work in Max and only levelling and sharpening in PS. It's a nice task, why not... I'll post a new WIP somewhere this week, this project is an eveningkiller Dennis
Bugga_Guy
yeah just have a plane with a tree shadow texture map (alpha channel) - no need for any lighting. Have that plane just sit just slightly above the sidewalk.
DennisHolland
That's it! I didn't thought of that one at all. Same story for tyretreads on the asphalt, that will work out fine with an opacitymap. This way I can shape treads in a slight curve just like the street itself... DennisHolland
First update for the finetuning of the render. I've paid close attention to Bugga's (Brian) advice and played around with opacitymaps for the rainy spots on the asphalt and changed the trees to 'totaltextures' but I must say that I'm not totally confident with 'm... I'll post a new one, with better reflections in the most right appartment-windows on sunday. Take care, Dennis
DennisHolland
Update, I think I'll leave it this way (before going over the top), but I have to finetune some minor artifacts. Maybe put a modest dirtmap on the pavers? Thanks, Dennis
Bugga_Guy
Excellent. I love how you experimented, much improvement from the first.
DennisHolland
Thanks to you Brian... Here's the last one before I ship it over to 'finished work'. The tree shadow didn't work out quite well with a plane (great idea though) so I've just put a big tree behind the cam (the sun comes from back left) and it was sorted right away. The bump in the water along the sides of the roads is quite cool and I will use that for my glass mats in the future. Just roughen up the pavers and the other things mentioned in this 'easterkiller-wip' and done we are (it was a great learning experience). bokkins
saw your final work just today! its really good, I like the reflection from the rainwater across the street. good job!
quizzy
Okay fellow dutchy here it goes: Very nice image with nice details but: - Your ambient is too dark. - Try matching your lighting to the cloud texture or try another cloud texture.. - The bump op the water is way too big. Try using a noise map with a smaller size. - Shouldn't the tire tracks on the asphalt be dark instead of lighter as the original asphalt.. Rubber is black... - If you show the inside of the apartments you better show some detail inside allthough I doubt you will see the inside with this kind of weather.. - The reflection in the glass seems to be too small, if there are buildings across that building they should be bigger in the reflection. - The saturation of the peeps are a little off... - Put some water on the pavement as well. Its allways nice to re-make (opleuken) your pictures to put them into your portfolio to show people what your quality can be. But be aware of the extra time you spent on them so you dont fool yourself and your potentional client. Hope I wasn't too harsh...
