If you make your spline path in the to viewport, then go side/front and add further vertex to get your height correct, then you can you fillet to smooth the corners, or set the sharp vertex to smooth instead of bezier etc.

 

For me, I like as few vertex as possible to achieve the result, starting to add loads means hassel if you need to change them later. Note the smoothness of the spline, ie segments has no bearing on the path taken by the camera, the path is assumed as the best curve possible.

 

Id also add for me the best way as peeps here have mentioned before, is to make your path, and path constraint a dummy to it, then link you camera to the dummy, giving you the added layer of animation should you need it.
