  • 2 weeks later...

excellent.

plug and play to set it up. a bit of a minefield choosing which security options to go for as it gives you the option of about 20 different methods.

i picked the pci card cerial number and told my router to accept only that code from my laptop.

I have the same model hardwired to my main PC, plus two PC cards and one laptop card wireless. Don't buy that '1500 feet'. I have trouble getting a strong enough signal from my attic (my studio) to my kitchen two floors below. It works now, but the signal strength is low, so the speed is slow, but it can get a signal. That is only AFTER I moved my RF-leaky cable modem into my basement behind as much stone as I could find AND moved the Linksys router away from my Boxx. It tool both. Now I get a great signal within my studio (it was only 60% at 15') and much better FM reception on my studio stereo.

I hope you are using W2K because the Linksys monitor panel is great. In XP you don't get it, just a crappy little panel in the OS.

Anyway, now I am happier with the wireless system. Enjoy yours!

i'm actually on xp home on my laptop, but thats fine. i dont plan on using the interface much if i can help it.

and ur right, 15 foot would do me fine. if i had a house where i could spread myself out to a 1500 ft radius i certainly wouldn't be concerned about the cheapness of this system ;)

Dear Jimm'yl

Can these wireless kits work with any internet provider?, e.g. I run BT Broadband with a router into my usb (obviuos i know). Or is it purely a wirless network where I'd have to have one machine physically connected.

My point is. My telephone line is 50ft away from my machine in my loft? Can this be used to get my machine to connect to the tinternet without the use of wires?

Yours Faithfully

James

The router does not need to be hardwired to a PC to allow access to an internet connection. However all PC would need a wireless card--a hardwired PC doesn't, of course. Last week my Boxx was dead (its feeling much better, thank you) so it was disconnected from the router and my other computers could use the web as usual.

It does require that you select the right communications setting.

Also, please note that the router is an Ethernet device. That is how I have it connected to the cable modem and previously to a DSL modem.

Welcome to the wireless age! I've had my wireless access point for a bit over a year now and I love it. Also don't agree with the range they say, but then again they alway claim that range to be what you can achive with link of sight communication, not though walls, floors etc. In the summer I even did some work out on the patio, but I had to move the WAP a bit so it sat on the window ledge of my office so it could bounce some signal off the neigbours house. ;)

When I move into a new house in a few years, I plan on doing structured cabling thoughout and probably have one WAP on each floor. That way I will have goo signal everywhere. Also those antennas on the Linkysys units are standard anttena connections to you can always go out and buy a longer one. Alternatly I think Linksys also sells signal boosters.

The only thing I will complain about on the Wireless cards is that they suck juice BIG TIME and I only get about 1/4 the battery life when I'm using it on my laptop

Ive had a Netgear wireless router/switch for about six months now. Although it's only the B spec, it's been great so far and speed hasnt been an issue at all. I've installed most of the software on my laptop through the wireless connection (some while i was on the can :D ) w/o a hickup.

I don know how people lived w/o this stuff! Although ironically, i do spend a lot more time on the can now and i heard that too much time on the can will ultimately result in hemorhoids eek2.gif !
