Chad Warner
Check UVW mapping, specular levels of materials, and that any bitmaps have the "crop" option checked, regardless of whether or not they actually are cropped.
Sawyer
Also make sure you only use vray materials.
alekzab
thanks sawyer, but where does one get vray materials? and does the renderer allow you create you own maps?
Sawyer
Well vray mats may belong to the advanced feature set. try a rendering with a lt gray material. add 1 mat at a time and see if you can isolate the material if its materials (usually is imho) that are causing your problems. Also turn off all raytace maps.

bobsan
You might also want to try vray shadows on your lights.

Jim Mann
The Farnsworth house gets extended huh!?! All the advice you are getting is good. Change all your materials to Vray materials, use Vray lights, use vray shadows, switch off any Max exposure control, set your maps to "apply crop".You can convert a scene to a VRAY scene from the quads menu (right click) What does it look like if you only light the scene using the skylight? My first test though would be to try the direct light with a multiplier of 1 rather 2.5 JM
tuekappel
also try to set the color mapping type to exponential. this won't get rid of the error message, but it will remove your over-bright spots
