MegaPixel
Hi all, The last time I used VIZ was version 3.1 and from what I could remember, I had no difficulty working with MAX files and viseversa. I've recently accepted a position which will require me to go back to the VIZ environment and I was wondering if the two interfaces are still identical, what features VIZ lacks (other then C.S., Special Effects, sub-object animation, Light Tracer...) and will some of my more recent works (MAX 7) be compatable with VIZ 2005? Does it have Editable Poly modeling tools, etc.? Thanks for your help - Mega
Chad Warner
Max 7 is NOT compatible with viz 2005. Viz 2006 and max 7 are compatible (so you'll have to wait a couple of months). Other than that, the feature sets are pretty comprable other than what you mentioned. Actually, probably more so than in previous versions. -Chad
MegaPixel
OK let me ask you this. Would it be possible to export my MAX 7 scene to a .3ds file to get backwards compatability? All I really have are textured mesh objects with a handful of standard lights to bring over - nothing that would use version 7 specifc features I don't think. -Mega
Chad Warner
I can't imagine why that would be a problem. Just make sure that you don't have any crazy modifiers on your objects.

MegaPixel
Just letting you guys know the results of my .3ds export from MAX to VIZ. The only thing the model retained was the mapping coords., the textures, subobject selection groups and material ID's all changed. All in all, it's still fairly cumbersome talking between the two. I hope now that MAX is part of Autodesk Media and Entertainment, that it will talk better with all future versions of VIZ. -Mega
Chad Warner
The main problem is the version differences between the two. It's like trying to open a 2005 format dwg in Acad 2002. It won't happen. I do agree that there should be some sort of way to save back to a previous version though. I know there was a script out there called "back from five" that allowed you to save everything from version 5 to a an older version, and I think it works with newer versions as well. You could try that and see if it works. Look on scriptspot.com
