first of all, what kind of IES are u guys using?

from my experience in using IEs files, u have to set up several things. first, set the bitmap path to the folder where u store your IES. next, when u use your ies, select carefully what kind of light eg. tungsten halogen downlight ot wallwashers.

after u place your light in your scene, do the Radiosity calculations and render.

if it's too dark, then u need more lights or your floor and ceiling materials are too dark, or your objects.
