doodler
why not go and shoot some road yourself? then you can get the correct angle lighting etc as you proposed scene

vkirchner
Thank you for the tutorial, but I would like to ask for assistance with a greater level of detail with respect to the road lines. I am trying to generate a highly detailed city driving animation to be used for an optical simulation. The problem I am having is how to paint road lines accurately, keeping the spacing correct as the road curves and also along ramps and exits. Can you suggest options for this? I have been trying to use vector based curves inside Photoshop CS. Regards Vince (Newbie)
piotrgreg
I had same problem once i just modeled the separate regions for curved lines and then put the procedural map on it to preserve the right b-w spacing - refer to some Ted Boardman tutorial on the main cg page good luck
AJLynn
I usually do that with geometry, it's pretty simple in Sketchup or Autocad or whatever to model the white dashed lines as maybe 1/8" extruded bits, then you can put a white paint texture on it with procedural bump and specular. If you want to do it in PShop... I forget how good CS's tools for this are but in Illustrator you can make the pattern using a simple dashed line with dash and space length defined, and apply it to a path. If you have Illustrator it's actually got some good procedural texture making features, you can make the diffuse, bump and specular from the same file. vkirchner
Unfortunately I do not have a copy of Illustrator available, I will have to fall back onto our cad systems for that. I have been trying to build specific brushes within Photoshop that will mimic the lines and spacing, but without too much luck. Probably my skill set is too limiting at this point. I had hoped to do a US and European set of road sets, but that will take some time to model the correct spacings of a very large track, and recently the Boss also asked for a Japanese version of the track. The hits just keep on coming, so I will look for the tutorial you mentioned. Thank You Vince
