plastic
i have a strange problem... i got screen burn with one of my 4 months old 191T's. but...its a LCD! after a few hours using max i noticed that the material editor frames (high contrast) burned in... it looks like it happens only with black pixels. yesterday it happened the first time. the monitor was powered off for 12 hours over night, it recovered, but there were still some artefacts visible on gray background this morning. i have a dual screen config with identical monitors, the second one is fine. can it be the temperature? it's summer here and exceptionally hot for this region (35°C in the room). Greg Hess
Never seen that happen Marc. Can you take a digi pic of it? I didn't think it was physically possible for a LCD to get burn in.
plastic
here we go... (the red/pink cast, visible in the last two images comes from the camera a/f sensor, it's not part of the problem)
Greg Hess
Oh man. Thats so not cool. I'd contact samsung support via email. I don't know any other real solutions as it obviously appears to be some sort of burn in . Sorry man.
plastic
thanks Greg, the burn-in is not permanent, but it comes fast, i had the material editor in the pictures open for a few hours only. it seems to take about 2-3x the time to go away again, even if the monitor is turned off. links i found: http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=insp_video&message.id=76469&view=by_date_ascending&page=1 http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=10639 http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88343 http://www.viewsonic.com/support/qa.cfm?topic=lcd&question=09 looks like its a very new but massive issue at the moment, at least with dell... xgarcia
Greg and Marc, I've been researching the 19IT and noticed that peoplee coming from CRT's complain of ghosting and bad pixels? Any such experiences from you guys? I mainly want to move to LCD to relieve eye strain and headache. Also, how is the color fidelty compared to CRT's? Well images tweaked in photoshop look radically different on other monitors and the web? Still researching... Xavier
plastic
Greg, it's still here but it's not a big issue. it only happens with large high-contrast areas, pretty much only with the material editor here. it doesnt happen with icons or taskbars. the artefacts are only visible on 50% grey areas. i usually have a wallpaper, thats probably why i never noticed it before. i think the heat also amplified the effect. i can live with it, but it still sucks. like pixel errors, an unpredictable lcd mangle. Xavier, bad pixels are mega annoying and a big issue with lcds larger than 17". i made an (inofficial) agreement with my dealer to get pixel-error free monitors. i know a big office with many 19 and 20" samsung screens, most have one or two bad pixel somewhere. especially red or green ones are a pain. color range and ghosting are not longer issues with good lcd's. the only thing i still find annoying with them is the angle of view dependent brightness shift. Greg Hess
You usually tend to not get dead pixels as dead "sub" pixels. The difference being a dead pixel is a REALLY noticable red, blue, or green dot on the screen. A dead subpixel is almost microscopic and thinner then a trinitron line, and usually only visible under extreme contrast (totally black background for example). I'll try and take a photo of a dead subpixel when I get a chance. Refurbished monitors are fine. I wouldn't go back to CRT's after switching to LCD's though...your eyes immediately realize how much radiation those things are putting out. Marc, Did you ever contact samsung about the problem? Xavier Hi Xavier, On the dead pixel issue, just buy from a reputable dealer and try to see if they will fire it up before you take it to check for dead pixels. I also have a 191T and a 172T and I dont regret buying either one, infact Im working towards getting another 191T But when I did get my 191T Im sure it was a rare event but we went through 5 monitors in the store before finding one without any dead pixels. For the most part they dont really bother me if they were off to the side but these were bright red or green rite in the middle of the monitor. -dave
xgarcia
Greg, Are there any reason not to buy (2) refurbished 19" (CPD-E440/B) trinitrons from sony.com? They are going for $279 a piece and I might hit this deal. Is refurbished a bad or good option? The price is very tempting. I'm running a 17" Trinitron now @ 115x864 (85hz) and it just seems small. I keep leaning in from my chair to read some websites and email. Xavier
xgarcia
Thanks for the feedback fellas. Marc, I hope you get that burn-in problem taken care of. Let us know what happens. I decided against the dual refurbed 19" trinitrons in favor of a single samsung 191T. I just can't stand having a slight headache after staring at screen for 2-3 hours. One last question for you guys: I noticed that newegg.com mentions they will only exchange the 191T if there are 8 or more dead pixels. The price is right for me, but if something goes terribly wrong will I have problems dealing with newegg? Anyone had problems with them? Like Dave, I will eventaully dish out cash for another one if all goes well. Xavier
xgarcia
OK!! My 191T is on its way via two day delivery for a total of $688.35 US (great price - wish I could get two). I ordered from BCD2000.com with a 30 day guarantee of no bad pixels .The saleman agreed to return/exchange how ever many monitors needed until I'm satisfied - salesman told me they would send shipping tag which covers the freight (no additional money out of my pocket). Let's hope the first one is a good one. Fortunately they are located in Tampa and I in Gainesville so I am just a 1.5-2 hour drive from their store. Thanks again guys.
