Motorway test anim'

Hi everyone, first animation post on this site with my own stuff. Hoping it's not to basic for this pro site, CGArchitect forums have some amazing work so I feel a bit humbled posting here.

I've been working on a long animation project (long for 3d anyway....10 minutes) for the last 6 years....no that isn't a typo  ...6 years .

This test clip was made 2 years ago but since then I've been working on the main project themes and have only just returned to this one. It's pretty straight forward but I'd like some crit on the general believability of the environment & camera movement etc.

The main design theme for my project includes many structural elements so this is really just a environ/light study for the surrounding infrastructure. I hope it's not too OT but I promise to post the associated architectural designs too when they've rendered :) .

I've added some gaussian blur & adjusted the colour & gamma a little. I've also added some rain in the second clip.

Thanks for any help or general impressions, good or bad...all welcome :) .

Hey, thanks for that. I wanted a handheld camera look but over did it a little because the finished version has more traffic & air turbulence...even so, your right, a little less maybe. I'm pleased you like the lighting...thanks for your input.

i think you need a broader range of color levels. it really seems to be missing the deeper levels, the darker levels. especially on the rain scene. the ground still looks dry. rain tends to darken things, and really bring out saturation and deep hues.

also, it might be kind of 'fun' to see the camera hit the pavement at the end. maybe it can spin through the air, and bounce on the ground. stop spinning as the camera lies on its side, with another truck coming at it, or stop spinning and you see the truck that just hit you drive away.

i like the camera movement though. it does feels like a home video. you have to imagine, if you are on a freeway like that, you nerves would be racked, and you would be shaky.

Im quite impressed. The focusing looks good. I like the camera movement. It looks good but doesnt give much time to pick up any detail, however that can be good if thats the intent.

Now im just going to be a little picky as these were the things that I noticed while watching. The first truck that passes, in the reflection on its windscreen, doesnt seem to reflect your sky, only your terrain. And secondly, in the second clip, the shadow under the truck on the left gives the feeling that it is floating. I think its because there is no shadow extending from the far left tires like there is on the other 2 trucks.

I do however, really like it. Sorry for being picky. Im working on a highway animation at the moment aswell and Ive gotten into the habbit of picking at everything.

Good work, will be good to see further progression

I did boost the gamma a little too much., original renders have deeper contrast but I was trying to compensate for the darkening of images on the 'net. I do however, like the desaturated feel of the colours, if you observe motorway footage it's probably even more washed out due to glare and atmospherics. I think it's natural to want to correct this.

I added the rain for clip two but haven't yet added all the associated effects including wipers, wet roads, spray & haze. The healights are supposed to flash/full beam too.

The shadow under that truck does seem to be absent...maybe a result of the gamma adjustments and acute angle as there isn't any reason for it really.

The sky is absent from the reflection, rooky error on the render options for the skydome.

LukeC, great to see your highway animation...maybe some stills for inspiration...cheers.

Anyway, thanks all for your helpful input. I'll plough on with it.
