Weider
Hi, Often when I talk to people I want a laptop they say: "your laptop won't be as fast than a desktop". is it true? I know by example, often the Hard drive is a 4200 or 5400 instead of 7200min for desktop. But with good specs like 60gigs 7200 or a 100gig 5400 (I heard this one would be faster than the 60gig 7200), a Pentium M 2.0ghz, 1gigs ram 533, a Nvidia 6800 256megs, is it still slower than a pentium with similar specs? I know for the price, a 3000$ laptop my computer is more than 3 years old, and I often have to work at job, appart, school, family, friend, etc. So I won't have choice to change it soon. DennisHolland
David, I'm running a multimediastudio and the first thing I did last year was to buy a set of laptops (Dell Multimedia Advanced 9100 Inspirons) with all 2Gb - 3.4Ghz - ATI mobility radeons 256Mb on board + 20" ultrasharps + 2 workstations with the same specs only 4Gb ram in the can. The point is that the workstations are almost only been used for renderjobs (up to 2540px, super hi-res 12000+ is always outsourced). Production is on the laptops (Don't forget to get VGI for dual screen support). Works great! So, if you're planning on a new set of hardwaretools, just consider your needs. Do you need to take your work to clients, do you like to be mobile and are you willing to spend $ 2000 on a set of 20" ultrasharps? If yes, I'd say go for the laptops. It has lots of advantages. I like to do some 'action modeling' right at my clients offices for a fast concept, or to discuss camera standpoints. Great service. The laptop is now also a PR-tool, see the point? For a comparision of workstation and laptop, the gap between both is getting smaller every time and I don't feel any differences. They all do the job as they should. Oh, one more thing. Don't stare blind on numbers in the specs. The only specs that really matters are the final pieces of artwork. If they are great, and produced within' a certain timeframe without any errors, who cares about specs at all? I know I don't... Good luck with your purchase. Tim Nelson
i tell you not laptops changed my life Hehe, just like cell phones. They are great to have, but now people expect to be able to get a hold of you no matter when, no matter where. There is no escape!!! I'm at my computer enough as it is. I think if I had a laptop it would only be worse. (not saying I wouldn't like one though )

siliconbauhaus
Boxx does a superb laptop if your looking to use one as full time computer
DennisHolland
I'd say go for a Dell (nice configuration options) or Alienware (Superb configuration options) These two are so called Parallel markets. I'm not familiair with the Alienware service but Dell's is okay down here in the Netherlands. Boxx is pricy but very hi-end. Check you budget and make a decision... Chaz
Dennis Try looking at "NotebookForms", do a google search. They talk about a large range of laptops. Most of the posters are cg people. The Sager laptop seems to be the best bang for the money.
siliconbauhaus
I just looked at the sager 9860 and the goboxx 2200 and I'd swear theyre the same thing.....hmmmmm but the sager and slap a boxx badge on it ;P
DennisHolland
Hi Patrick, they are exactely the same (Sager 9860/ goBoxx 2200). That's what you're going to get when you want to push your products through several targets (or they have the same designer). Not very classy but it might be profitable. I had the same feeling about Dell and Alienware. Not for the looks but the total business-concept. Same approach, prices, services and philosophy. I know they're 2 different companies but also with the very same concepts. Hhmm, maybe I'll rip the DELL logotype off my stations and have mine glued on...why not? Chaz, thanks for the tip but it wasn't me looking for a new set of tools. It's Salisu's question. Dennis
siliconbauhaus
its funny because I've always bought boxx's and assumed that they were actually building their own laptop. just priced up the 2 and the sager is about 300 cheaper but I think I'd stick with the boxx
ihabkal
if you had $50000 you could custom build a laptop that is faster than available desktops. it's all about money. money.money.money. money. money.money. money.money.money. money.money. money. money. money. money. money. money.money. money. now you are supposed to read the above like Daffy Duck in Ali Baba's episode where he finds the treasure and says :mine mine...it's all mine...mine mine mine...Unless you have never seen Bugs Bunny before...
