HD probs

Recommended Posts

In the last 2 days, my system has become very unstable (weird errors and crashes etc), very slow to boot up and launch programs, and the hard drive has been making some very unusual crackling and clicking noises, even when Idle. I thought it might be virus (even though it's not connected to the internet), but I've scanned my system and all is OK. I've run Chech Disk, and all is clean (although it took 3.5hours to do it).I checked 'speed fan' (a program that monitors the fans and HDs) yesterday and all was good, but this morning it reports the health of my Maxtor 120gb Hard Drive at about 40% !

Am I right in thinking my HD is about to die, and if so can I have the contents 'ghosted' onto a new HD ?

i would back everything up asap. it sounds like you hard drive will stop working very soon. i have had this happen, and lost work and libraries. it is no fun.

Just taken it in, and they think it's going to die too. I just hope they can boot it up 1 more time to be able to copy everything across. It's my C Drive where all my programs are (my data files are on another drive), so I can re install them if neccessarry, but a bit of a pain.

Must be going around, One of my drives is doing the same thing. I've had it with failign drives, happens about every 2-3 years with me, so I just ordered an 8 channel RAID controller and am picking up 4 new drives to run in a RAID 0 configuration. Unless the whole array goes or is killed by a virus then I'll be safer. I hope. I just hope everything is ok before the new drives get here. My drive mirrors have been less than successful the last week and as of this moment I'm not able to access my computer remotely, so I'm a bit worried it's gone.

You'll probably want to consider at least a RAID 1 (mirroring) setup, if not RAID 5. RAID 0 (striping) will give you great performance but no redundancy or fault tolerance. Good link to RAID definitions:

I do already have a RAID (striped) set-up

My point was that a striped (RAID level 0) setup does not offer any protection if one of the drives fails. Jeff mentioned that he was going to set up his new array as RAID 0, and I was suggesting otherwise

Well the new RAID array is installed and a new 550W Antec put in. For ONCE in my life an install has gone right the first time! I was actually really surprised how easy is was to install a RAID controller having never done one before. Just plug it in and go really.

If anyone is looking for one, I'd highly reccomend the 3ware escalade. Very easy to setup. I bought the 8 port SATA version.
