Does VIZ exist or doesn't it?

i beg you m8, DONT DO IT!!!!!

OK, see if YOU can talk ChaosGrp. into getting the C4D plug of vRay ready before we retire. I've got to earn a living NOW and Cinema isn't cutting it with its render engine. I'm most interested in using vRay, and right now the only way to do that would be to buy VIZ or MAX. I don't need all the extra stuff in MAX since I already have it in Cinema. So VIZ seems like the best way to go.

Also, now that I own a competing product, I might get a better price from ADSK. When they killed Lightscape I was not eligible for any discounts.

So WHY doesn't VIZ appear on the 'products' page of the new Autodesk/Discreet website?

I tried my best to learn Viz4. Not that it's that difficult - it's just that it's such a resource pig. Took a good 30 seconds to load the program.

Too spoiled by LightWave coming up in a couple of seconds. Back to rendering on LightWave now...

I know what you mean, Ernest. VRay looks to be a great solution. It's a shame they're not nearly as agressive as the Maxwell Render group seems to be.

I'm an AutoCAD user so I'm used to going to http://www.autodesk.com. From there click on "Products". It's the last one listed at the bottom of the page (listed alphabetically).

thats a real shame to hear :(

I highly suspect that Cinema 9.5 will have a revamped render engine that will make us all quite happy. But no-one can talk (NDAs). In the meantime I'm CONSIDERING using VIZ/vRAY.

I'm not walking away from Cinema anytime soon.

Anyway, STRAT, you use Max part of the time. I would just be following the leader.

ssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!

ur right, i do. but purely for modelling tricky bits that AutoCAD cant easily deal with. i prefer max/viz modelling to c4d, purely because i'm so much more used to it and proficient in it. i havent rendered in viz on nearly 4 years.

I'm running both VIZ 2005 and MAX 7.1 at work and I can tell you there IS a difference in rendered output - both in speed and quality. I never use VIZ to render scanline as dumb as that seems. MAX has Light Tracer GI also

Also, the subscription plan is a pretty good deal in the long run.

Back to the original query . . .

VIZ was never on the "Discreet" website, only Max and GMax. So now it is still not considered part of "Autodesk Media and Entertainment". Even though it is just a light version of basically the exact program.

For some reason Autodesk Media and Entertainment just doen't have the same cache of Discreet, for a company so worried about brand image I still don't get the name change.

I'm not trying to get into a shoving match here, but I would suspect that any differences you see are because of code base: Viz2005 is the same code base as Max6, not Max7.x. It might be a bit misleading to say that there are differences like this without comparing similar products.

Ernest, my entire office uses Viz2005 for all of our projects, even animations (of which we do relatively few). I think Viz is a great product and has served us well for the past 4 years. It seems to have acquired a bad reputation for some reason - probably because of the previous release (Viz4) that attempted to overhaul the interface to appeal to beginner architects. Since that idea was shelved, Viz is pretty much the same as Max, sans sub-object animation capabilites, video post and particle systems (I'm not including render differences like Light Tracer because I don't think anyone really cares - and you're going to use VRay anyway ;) ). If you don't need the latter - or find other ways to make them up - Viz is a great product at a more reasonable price than Max.

Not that you were asking for a review or anything...
