CPU components to make my machine fly???

Recommended Posts

Hey people. I've just recently got into the world of CG rendering. I've been using VIZ 2005 and MAX 7.0 as well as Architectural Desktop to model. I do work as an architectural technologist and have used ADT for 4yrs now but only MAX and VIZ for about 1yr. I model everything in ADT and render in MAX and VIZ. My question to you all is this....I'm extremely interested in getting very seriously into the world of renders even more than I am now. I feel I need to upgrade my CPU but am unsure where to start. I want to get the most bang for the buck but want a pro machine. I will buy components piece by piece over time. I currently have this :

AMD Athlon 64 processor 3000

K8T800 Motherboard

2GB RAM DDR 400 PC32000

SATA HDD 120GB

ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB DDR

350 watt power supply

What should I upgrade first that will have the most impact and what about power supply concerns? Also, what do you all think about software modding my current ATI card to act as a Fire GL? What is more important - video card or ram or processors???

Any help would be extremely greatful and much appreciate.

Thanks.

Hi,

had a great piece of advice yesterday from my IT-guy in Italy (who is on top of the hottest news in the hardwareworld of today) that NVidia comes with a great new videocard, the Nforce4 it's worth to take a peek at http://www.nvidia.com/page/home.html and http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_20262.html for the ins and outs.

Good luck,

Dennis

Actually that's already a really good computer, you won't squeez out much more performance without going to dual processors. First thing to upgrade is the power supply. The graphics card is good but for 3DS Max/Viz if you have the money get an nVidia Quadro card and install the Maxtreme software. I didn't have the money really so I got a used Quadro4 900 on Ebay, and going from a Radeon 7500 to that... wow. Big difference in Viz. Then I got a new TV Wonder PCI for $8 on Ebay cause my old card was an All-In-Wonder, and I'm good to go :)

The nForce4 isn't actually a video card, it's a motherboard chipset for AMD Socket 939 boards. It's a good chipset though - I have an nForce3-250 board (same generation as your K8T800) and it's kickass.
