Assign Materials Automatically By Layer

Hi,

 

I tried to make a script that looks at the layer name eg: "CHROME_CHAIRLEGS" and will automatically assign the Chrome material to all the objects in the layer.

 

For some reason, some of my materials disappear from the scene when I run a script I tried to write. Does someone have a script already written that does something similar to automatically assign materials based on layer name?
