Christopher Nichols
Hey guys... just wondering. I have been told this in the past and don't know if it makes a difference. I have been told that when installing a motherboard to a case to put some tape on the screw holes of the case where the standoff's go, because it isolated the motherboard from static charges... Is this common practice, and is this needed?
Greg Hess
I used to use tiny plastic washers for awhile. Bit more useful then plastic tape. I haven't used washers in quite a long time now, and haven't had any problem with the systems. I do however use electrical tape, if two components (like a hsf and capicator) are getting too close to one another.
Christopher Nichols
hmmm... thanks Greg... I may do it anyway... Just got a new Coolermaster alum case and it will be sitting close to some carpet, don't want my cat to zap my system he rubs his face against it. With this dry LA weather, my cats are like Dynamo from the "Running Man." I figure a little tape can't hurt.
Greg Hess
Christopher, Do you mean on the underside of the motherboard? Or the underside of the motherboard mount? (Aka not under the board, but under the case where the board is mounted). Never heard that before, but sounds interesting. Cats are extremely deadly to machines . You might want to consider (it might already come with one) installing a charcoal filter behind the fan intake on the machine if its near the floor. Cat hair tends to build up pretty quickly in computer cases.
David Knourek
I havn't seen them in a while but you used to be able to get plastic standoffs for mounting the motherboard. But on another note I dont think it would help to much due to the ports on the back of the board usually touch the case at some point. -dave
Christopher Nichols
Yeap... I just put tape right over the screw holes on the mount. Of course the moment I pierce the tape to put the stand off in the screw screws into metal... hence there goes my theory. Yeah this case has a filter, but my other ones does not. I have a "electronics" attachment to my vaccum and use it once every couple of weeks (if I'm good).
David Knourek
On another note I have two very curious and sometimes annoying pets, namely a cat and a dog and for the most part Ive never had any trouble with them or myself for that matter shocking the sides of the cases. On another note though my cat has talken to licking the ports on the back of the computers (not sure what thats all about) but I just back the case as close as I can to the wall so he cant get at the ports, and my office gets closed when Im not in there. Anyway enough babbeling Im just saying I havnt used the plastic standoffs or the insulating rings for a couple years and have had no problems with static in any of the twenty odd PC's I've built. -dave

Greg Hess
The only problem I've ever had in regards to static/creatures is as follows... I work for the department of entomology (Study of Insects). As you can imagine bugs tend to get out now and then...weird ass things, big ass spiders, scorpions, you know the drill. Anyway I get weird problems now and then where a laserjet will print a black splot on a page every once in awhile...the reason? A cockroach got on the toner wheel. Hehe. I've also had some of the little buggers crawl into a system with out fans on all intake/exhaust ports, crawl underneath the motherboard, and fry the entire system. Now we've got filters/fans on all intake/exhaust ports on the machines.
David Knourek
I can see it now. Greg Hess invents the first mini bug zapper for inside a computer :ngelaugh: -dave

I don't see why we should rely on you to benchmark all these systems when you obviously have some very buggy computers... (drum role)...
