Raffi
Greetings all , Maybe tomorrow I am getting a new computer for our office (architectural office), it is: Pentium 4 3.2 GHz, or 3.2 GHz Extreme Edition 3 GB of RAM DDR2 Kingston M.B. Asus 925 X or XE G. C. Asus 6800 GT 256 MB - PCI e HD 300 GB SATA 16 I use 3D Studio max, mental ray, Autocad, & Photoshop . . . The priority is mental ray . . . and maybe maxwell in the near future .. So please tell me what is the best system that I must install ? ? ? Windows XP Pro ofcourse , , , which is better: SP1 or SP2 or 64 bit Win XP Pro ?! ?! ?! ?! ?! ?! ?! ?! ?! I need very fast renders with mental ray . . . . without errors or crashes .. Any ideas / suggestions please ! ! ! Thanks for your help ..
ihabkal
it will crash...Mental ray crashes on any system every once and a while. it's a feature... one processor? don't even think about it. two processors divide rendering time by half. the 3 GB Ram is good it will help a lot Mental Ray needs a lot of ram. too bad it can use two at the most...the third is for the OS and the interface. doesn't matter which os you use. no difference especially that you ar egetting a single processor. and if it's not x64 compatible it won't run windows 64 bit. and 100% your new pc isn't. 3.2ghz? why didn't you wait for dual core opterons? in a mnonth or two these will be available widely and you would quadruple your rendering speed. bad decision............................I feel sorry for you......................... Raffi
oops I forgot, what about RAID controller, and Intel Application Accelerator RAID edition ? ? Do you know anything about it ?? and the 3 GB switch in SP1 and SP2, how can I do it ?? Thanks ihabkal, this is the budget for now, you can speak with the boss not with me . . ihabkal
I spent a year nagging my old boss and when he got me a dual I quit one month after that. now I have been nagging my new boss for a dual dual core I'll let you know if it works out about the technique of nagging...Hey everyone nags his own boss okay? I set up raid myself and did a lot of testing. with raptor drives you almost get double the performance. With regular drives 50-70% more speed. but one drawback it sometimes causes crashes, sometimes if there's a small tiny problem you might lose all your data. if you are going to use raid 0 have a backup system that saves your work to an extenral hard drive on the fly...beware. I lost a lot of time, info, work, animations across the years because of not having an automatic backup.
Raffi
ok Ihab, beleive me I tried, but he didn't respond . . maybe I'll try again but this time I'll waste a lot of rendering time untill he likes that idea . . what crash U R talking about Ihab, with 3d max ?? or all the software ?!?! So you are suggesting that I shouldn't continue with RAID ! !
Devin Johnston
I've got a Mental Ray question; how much do additional render nodes cost?

So you are suggesting that I shouldn't continue with RAID ! ! without running any software but the OS raid sometimes crashes. the Sata raid systems some of them are used with technology related to SCSI hardware that is not perfectly compatible with sata Hard drives. I want raid, but I will wait till they get better or get scsi instead of sata. I can tell you the specific two things that casues crashes if you want to go technical. Raffi
So ihab please tell me exactly what is the best solution if I want: 1) 1 processor, what is the best P4 or P4 Extreme edition or AMD . . . . here in our country the maximum is 3.2 GHz for now, or we should wait 10 days if we want to get it from abroad (for more than 3.2 GHz ) .. .. .. 2) and what is the best if 2 processors , 2 Xeons or 2 AMDs or what . . . ?? what do you suggest, as I can see that you have a good experience in hardware ... and what about the motherboard, Asus or other....... ? ? Unfortunately we can't wait 2 months for the dual core opterons, we have 2 days only ... .. . Thanks again ..

Unfortunately we can't wait 2 months for the dual core opterons, we have 2 days only ... .. . Thanks again .. This is my 100th post. youpi for me............. AMD is faster in rendering. I have Xeon at work, AMD at home, I tried all cpus from MPs to Opterons and athlon64. Get a processor with 1MB cache like opterons. single or dual it's faster to get AMD for rendering. see this http://www.techreport.com/reviews/2005q2/opteron-x75/index.x?pg=7 Clearly Opterons have the advantage in rendering with 3ds max. Go with dual opteron 250 or 252 if you can. the new 252 consume less power and support SSE3 so they are less prone to crashing. AMD's only problem is overheating. the cpus overheat if not well assembled or if the computer is not well ventilated so they crash and freeze. Get from a good provider with a good warranty. I have athlon 3500 with 1mb cache and 2GB ram at home that is very stable. the cpu itself costs $250 at newegg but is great for any type of work. best value for money if there's no cash. Get a motherbboard with socket 939 as this is the future they are going to support this for a long time and when you want to upgrade to athlon fx55 change cpu that's it!. Nforce 3 or 4 if you can find for the motherboard. Tyan and Iwill are great motherboards. Asus is cheaper but with less features. Mine is Gygabyte and has fire wire and many things costed me around $100 (single cpu) .Don't get a huge graphics card like the Geforce 6800GT or Ultra becasue they consume too much power and will cause your system to crash, get a cad card Quadro 1400 or similar runs cooler and faster with autocad and max. ATI V7100 is amazing but costs $800+. If you want to be safe stick with the configuration you made originally it works. AMDs are faster but overheating is a problem... Raffi
really really thank you, you helped me a lot . . & sorry for my long questions . . maybe I will go with the dual opterons, or mostly with 1 (3.2 GHz) Intel® Pentium® Processor Extreme Edition (Dual-Core): http://www.intel.com/products/processor/pentiumXE/index.htm with Asus P5WD2 Premium: http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?l1=3&l2=11&l3=184&model=493&modelmenu=1 with 3 GB of RAM DDR2 533, and Asus 6800GT with 500W (or more) PSU ..... Is this a good choice ?? If this is the hardware, then will windows XP x64 work with it ? ? ? thanks for being patient with me
ihabkal
I like it it's dual core so you get almost twice the speed of a regular one. nice I like it.
