why is my 3ds max 64 bit is slower than 32 bit?

Hi all im not a serious renderer but i do do quite a few small renders and short animations.

 

ive been rendering using 3ds max 9 32bit for quite a while but i have just upgraded to WIN XP 64bit and have thus installed the 64bit version of max as i assumed it would be faster than running 32bit.

 

however I have done some comparison renders between my old 32 bit (which was running on WIN XP 32bit) and they appear slower than my 64bit version running on WIN XP 64 bit.

 

Any reason this might be like this? (i render using the on board mental ray and never use plugins if thats relevant)

Check the page file for both OS.

How to check your 3dmax is 32bit or 64bit?
