  1. In the same boat Kristian. I currently have a 2011 dual socket MB with E2550s This has given me the strength of the 8core which is nice when it comes to CPU rendering. I am looking at the Ryzen and for the money it seems to be great. However, reading Scotts link(ihave quoted the benchmark test below where they turn off AVX - which I am not sure what it means exactly) I have some doubts. Now I am kind of thinking of going back in the direction of dual socket but debating if its really worth the cost since more of our rendering power and workflow can come from multi gpu rendering. I think the Ryzen would do well but it certainly hasn't outperformed the Intels just yet with all other software. In my opinion, Ryzen would be good (getting 16threads on a single processor) but software in general hasn't been finely tuned to this particular processer. Anyone out there working with a dual cpu's and are they really helping the workflow? The one I have now was built in 2012 and is still kicking butt...., but is definitely out of date and I would love to amp up my hardware all around. -tomshardware.com "We start with AMD’s very own favorite example that the company kept showing during the presentations: Cinebench R15. First, we need to note that the only way to get the following numbers is by disabling the AVX instruction set completely. This is to say that Cinebench might be a good example, but it can’t necessarily stand in for all that many other applications when it comes to the AMD Ryzen 7 1800X’s real-world performance. Nevertheless, these results provide us with a good basis of comparison for what’s to come later. Note: For all 3.8 GHz benchmarks we turned XFR off (AMD) and Turbo Core off (Intel). For the single core benchmark we also disabled SMT."
  2. Hey All, Was trying to find a collection of nice pre-animated bushes and shrubs to use in the foreground of an animation that would be composited in After Effects. I can't find them on the interweb. Can someone provide me a link to a site that sells these collections? Thanks!
  3. I cannot seem to get the upload image to work on this website. Any ideas why it will not open up the upload window? Thanks, P
  4. I don't know if this company got mentioned but they offer a great product. quadrocopter.com
  5. I found it, the search results were slow. It was infact, where it needed to be and said it would be. I changed the dimensions and it accurately placed the window into the top right corner. I then tried to change all number to 0. It was not showing up. I couldn't remember the original numbers so I changed the last 2 numbers to 39 & 244. Previously I was restarting Max this time I just save the file an viola! Render Status Bar back to how it use to be. Oh how I missed thee.
  6. http://forums.cgarchitect.com/38791-render-status-bar-missing.html From a previous thread that has been closed. I am having the same problem with a missing render status bar. The header is shows upon render but the progress bar does not. In the solution given here: I cannot find the 3dsmax.ini seems as if I cannot search for it or locate it in Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit Can anyone suggest a solution for me? Thanks
  7. Okay, now I think I get the picture.- New video card. No Boxx. - 100$ is not bad at all. Last time it was a trade for Jerry Sienfeld tickets and a painting. Good friend, so it was worth it! It's hard to be 100$ though. Maybe what I will do is go with the GTX 690 and a little more RAM. It turns out and I may not of mentioned; I have 850W power so, I should not need to worry about new power, right? On top of that I can get (G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)) (x 3) for 280.00total - But that would be maxing it all out and you said I probably didn't need that much. What amount of RAM would be useful if I can take advantage of higher amounts of RAM? and what exactly would that help me with? Less crashes and more multitasking? If I do this, I suppose keeping the old equipment to swap back in, while upgrading to a i7 processor Workstation and using the GTX and newer RAM in the new machine, once I can afford everything, is over thinking things? Probably should just order a new system all at once leave the older machine intact, and move on? But, what if I could only afford the Graphics Card and RAM? Iam still going to see a vast improvement with just the Graphics Card alone, and so I have heard it never hurts to have more RAM. Please, correct me if I am still not thinking about this the right way. This has been informative, thank you.
  8. Jason - Thank you for the thorough response. I have considered purchasing another machine to expand my production rendering. - Windows 7 Ultimate is my OS - I am interested in the GTX video cards. I will look into those more carefully My main problem is working with models that have a ton of geometry. 2mil polygons plus. I am learning how to better manage the parts to increase productivity but at some point the viewports and other windows become slow and difficult to work with. Since my OS and operating system can handle some more RAM, this would be the least expensive most efficient upgrade right now. I was happy building my computer before but if I were to purchase a new system would you recommend Boxx? or Something else as a complete system? Thanks again.
  9. I put together my computer a few years back. Here are my specs and I was look for some feedback on RAM upgrades and any other upgrades that would help me out with production efficiency. Mother Board Dual Quad Core Intel Xeon E5520 @ 2.27GHz Z8NA-D6© Current RAM GeIL EVO ONE 12GB (6 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500) Desktop Memory Model GE312GB1066C7HC Graphics Card - NVIDIA Quadro FX 3700 512mb I would like to upgrade in order of lowest to highest cost RAM --> GRAPHICS --> CPU RAM - I would like to maximize the amount of RAM b/c RAM is relatively inexpensive. My motherboard has a Maximum up to 96GB RDIMM/Maximum up to 24GB UDIMM What should I think about when upgrading RAM Do I need to upgrade any other software/firmware/hardware? Power supply? I am not 100% confident when it comes to swapping out parts of a computer and would like to do this the right way, especially in the name of getting the most out of VRAY and 3dsMAX among other programs like PS, AI, Revit etc. Thanks in advance! Philip
  10. Does anyone have a suggestion for companies that are really reputable for building scale models and also I am looking for a company that is a specialist with 3d Printing. I would imagine someone out there is specializing in this type of Prototyping with Architectural models. Does 3dsMax output to these 3d print machines well? What are the most important things to consider? I hardly know much about them but would think there are some qualities to look for when choosing a particular method of printing. Thanks -Philip
  11. Hello, Currently I am living in Austin, TX. I moved down here from Virginia to find some new connections and experience this great city. So far I have not been able to run around and network with many people as I would like because of the work load I brought with me. If anyone reading this is local and wanting to connect let me know. I may need some help with modeling on some projects coming up and was hoping to connect with anyone nearby and in the field of Architectural Visualization or any kind of Design Visualization. Does anyone know of any interesting conferences coming up in this area that would be of interest to a CG Artist? Thanks and I hope to hear from some of you. -Philip Currently I work with 3dsMax2012 and Vray.
  12. Well, that my friend , is unknown. I have a NVIDIA Quadra FX 3600. Not sure if this is good GPU but should be decent. OR should I say I don't know if this GPU is good with Vray and Max. I have been piecing my system together for a while now. With that said, where should I check to see if I have the right settings. I have done some playing around with the preferences but honestly have no idea what I am doing in there. Somethings about thread optimization? I am sure it has something to do with it. And for all I know I completely messed it up when I was tinkering. Any references would be appreciated or a decent clue as to where I could find some more info on this and get the right settings. thanks
  13. I have searched for this issue and still cannot find it. Also, this is my first post so, hello all! This is a great site! I am using 3dsMax and Vray 2.20.xx Each and everytime I start up Max and open the material editor, my material slots appear blank until I click on each one. (no matter if I have initiated the Vray license or not. It's really annoying and I hope someone here has info on this. It shouldn't be like this but I have not a clue. Thanks for the help.
