  1. I know your 2 weeks are up but just in case you're still looking for a plugin that's easy to use, you can try out Ambient Occlusion for Sketchup. It's easy to use and makes renders quickly. Hope you got what you needed.
  2. I would also recommend SketchUp. From the name itself, it's pretty much like drawing. Also, for beginners like you there's a whole archive of 3d models to download and use to decorate/enhance your scene. Once you get comfortable you can try Sketchup extensions like Ambient Occlusion to get photorealistic renderings. It's very user-friendly and fast but gives you a lot of options.
  3. Hello there! Take a look at Ambient Occlusion and SketchFX for simple projects. You can find them here. Ambient Occlusion makes it easier to do photorealistic 3d renderings and SketchFX lets you cartoon, pencil, watercolor and other styles. Plus they have other features for rendering like camera effects that might give you your desired output. Good luck!
  4. Hello Rita! If you're thinking of exploring SketchUp maybe you can give Ambient Occlusion and SketchFx a shot. These are SketchUp render plugins, very easy and has many great features for your projects. Users can easily manipulate the mapping by simply drag and drop plus it also has it's built-in camera effects. Goodluck!
  5. If you're looking for the best balance of cost and features, then I think SketchUp is your best option. 3DS is the standard for a reason, but it's value depends on how detailed and complex your models will be. The same goes for the rendering software you use. If you want to generate renders quickly and don't want anything complicated, then look at the SketchUP extensions from Fluid Interactive. Full disclaimer: this is my company. But the Ambient Occlusion and SketchFX will both give you good looking renders.
  6. Max+Vray is the standard for a reason, but it can be costly and it could be more than you need depending on your market. If you're looking for cost effective and pretty easy to learn software, then start with SketchUp for modeling - it's got a large community and a lot of training materials and a decent free version (Make). I'm biased, but take a look at FluidRay for rendering - it integrates with SketchUp, Rhino and has scripts for Max.
  7. Were you able to get the file open? It sounds like your system doesn't have enough memory. You could try exporting the Obj file and then rendering in something else.
