Residential Exterior, Max

GI stands for Global Illumination. Max has two built-in GI solutions: one is lightracer (use a skylight, and add Lightracer to the Advanced Lightning Rollout in Render settings) and the other is radiosity. Radiosity can be used with any kind of lights, requires a pre-calculation which takes some time, and renders the effect of light bouncing on and off surfaces. Later editions of max have mental ray integrated, which can be used for Global Illumination, but requires lots of experimentation and practice to get decent results. Try max's help, or do the tutorials, they will clarify things!
