Talking from experience :D

Strange :confused::confused:

...judging from your post "How can I become faster AutoCAD" I was geting impression that you are still struggling with AutoCAD.

del82, I have been using Rhino3D quite a long time :D...

(that is a pic of an approximation of the Guggenheim, it took me 7 days using references pics and drawings from books )

(8 hours using blue prints that I found on-line (BTW 8 hours not including rendeing times))

Rhino is pretty good for custom shapes, but becuase it's only a Nurbs modeling software, simple things that could be done real fast in poligons take a long time to make in Rhino.

(It probably would have take me about the same amount of time to make that model if all the walls were straight )

Rhino and AutoCAD are CAD apss. in this story.

I wouldnt say that AutoCAD is a 3D modeler, its VERY powerfull in 2d drawings, drafting, plan drawings...

But 3D in AutoCAD IS possible and can be done, but tools are very primitive and you are limited, results = more spended time ---> but it doest have to be if you are modeling shapes like walls, floors, simple shapes. With complicated you can try with LISPs, but again you are "limited" and "primitive".

I think AutoCAD hasnt changed or upgraded its 3D arsenal since release 2000.

Rhino is defacto a 3D modeler. You can design, manufacture...since it is CAD you have abilty for CAM. I dont think Max has this precision nor accuracy.

Drafting options are poor (lintypes, linweights, hatching...), but look very promising in the upcoming release 4 (cant wait :p )

Autocad can only help finish the model

I would be more carefuly when saying Model or Drawing, because from your statment I could import eg. an automobile part model from Catia, or Rhino and finished it or "clean" it in AutoCAD!!??

simple things that could be done real fast in poligons take a long time to make in Rhino.

I dont belive that your saying that making polys, flat surfaces, coplanar surfaces, 2d surfaces, UVs ( dont know how to named them anymore) is hard, because you have at least 10 operations and dozens of different ways to do that in Rhino!!I must have misunderstood you at some point!

Where?

I think that the "limits" of AutoCAD make it good. If I had to model a city and was concerned about poly count I would use AutoCAD. You have a lot of control over how clean you're model is, and it has good block functionality. When you model there's less temptation to cheat... As I've been taking on bigger projects any cheating that I do always bites me in the butt in a big way... an example being modeling a curtain wall and not using blocks... or when there are changes scaling groups rather then re-proportioning things correctly... Scale 1D and scale 2D are Rhino's evil temptations when modeling..

The other issue is sharing models... I know people cringe when they get a meshed rhino model from me.. and I know it's like a breath of fresh air when I get a 3D AutoCAD model...

The main issue with poly modeling in rhino now is that you don't have Booleans or a wide array of snaps for meshes.. v4 should resolve that, since a lot of focus is being placed upon making all the comands work on meshes (polygons)..

to ecastillor

Hey, I am still preparing it. it would be a set of packages from basic modeling to scanline and mental ray rendering. I would take Le Corbusier's Villa Savoye as a sample. But it is still a long way to go, because i am doing it only after getting home from office.

  • 1 year later...

i just have to ask y don;t we have a`Rhinoceros forum?

simple stuff is rhino does not take longer :p that's silly talk

glad to see people here know about v4, it will rock for those who use it and i think autodesk is scared of it's potential because of their own bloatish monopolizing of the industry. expect more incompatiblitys in future DWG formats hah
