GeraldH
I've been in the drafting/visualization business for...well...much too long. I've just now noticed that I need to hold my newspaper at monitor distance. There are 2 kinds of CAD operators...those that wear glasses and those the will wear glasses... DavidR
I've been doing this for 12 years, and my Coke-bottle prescription hasn't changed. BTW, when will the 9Megapixel IBM monitors come down in price? -I bet that would help, plus LED backlighting and bigger screens.
luckytohaveher
I asked my doc years ago. He said it is all genetic. While your eyes will get tired, fatigued, and otherwise abused it won't change your prescription. Don't thank the monitor, thank your parents... Sorry... But, hey, I'll bet the 9Megapixel would really help!

Ernest Burden III
As you approach 40, your arms get shorter. My wife recently observed "I guess when you hit 40 the warranty is up". I just filled my prescription for reading glasses (and now I can see what year those CDs were released). I had it for almost a year before filling it. 20/20 is average eyesight--you can do much better than that. I used to have 10/20 sight, now a lovely pair of spectacles. My hearing isn't what it was due to the Clash and Ramones. I haven't yet experienced any of the 'guy' problems, but there is evidence that Viagra may cause blindness. The warranty is definately up. IC
My eyesight is still pretty good but when I stand up from my desk to talk to someone, they think I have the worst nervous twitch in medical history. Must blink, must blink..
Ernest Burden III
by The Time i was 19 i had almost died 4x Times That's just typical 'boy', though I've worked hard so that my sons can't say that (but I can). The rest...is icing I guess. When you're about to die (for keeps) and you life flashes before your eyes it will quite a show--and a long one. I got glass recently, due to my focus is going , they say it is usual with people who do a lot detail work the eyes get lazy due to close up work, and can't dcus on normal everyday things. Two 21" crts don't help much all the same. so yes i am loosing my sight slowly. phil
Crazy Homeless Guy
for what it is worth, i stunled on this last night.... 14. Prevent near-sightedness! Poor distance vision is rarely caused by genetics, says Anne Barber, O.D., an optometrist in Tacoma, Washington. "It's usually caused by near-point stress." In other words, staring at your computer screen for too long. So flex your way to 20/20 vision. Every few hours during the day, close your eyes, tense your body, take a deep breath, and, after a few seconds, release your breath and muscles at the same time. Tightening and releasing muscles such as the biceps and glutes can trick involuntary muscles -- like the eyes -- into relaxing as well. http://www.menshealth.com/cda/article.do?site=MensHealth&channel=health&category=other.diseases.ailments&conitem=98f183b403517010VgnVCM200000cee793cd____&page=4 . Allen
I'm now 44...and yes my arms get shorter every year...this is natural though...has nothing to do with our work (IMO). Just one of those "great" things about getting older. I did just purchace a 24" widescreen monitor from Dell...it's helped a lot.
Crazy Homeless Guy
what is this whole arms shorter thing? ..i have never heard of this. i suppose it is okay since my arms have always been slightly long for my height. i guess that means i will hit my prime about 50. woo-hoo. DennisB
At 58, and apparently the oldest guy posting on this thread (much to my chagrin as I'd always thought Ernest was older), I can say that eyesight isn't the only thing that doesn't work like it used to. My advice to the forty-somethings is to invest in bran futures, not to mention stock in the drug companies specializing in laxative, memory and "circulation" drug research, though not necessarily in that order. You might want to consider companies working on better, more effective dental and hair replacements as well. Go here for eyeglasses though. After doing some research, I saved over $200 and with great service to boot. The point is, if you get in early you can probably make money as your mind and body begin the inevitable downward spiral
Ernest Burden III
what is this whole arms shorter thing? ..i have never heard of this. Testosterone renders you stupid, or, Fran is more cleverer than the rest of us. OR Its a visual joke--imagine someone--me, for example--having to hold out a CD at arm's length to try to read the song list, so the arm seem to get shorter as even this sad gesture fails to reveal what track 6 is. Reach farther, reach farther...the arms must be getting shorter. You'll get it, guys, there's still time.
Guest nazcaLine
i once read that when you get older your entire body shrinks, you get shorter, maybe because your bone-joints and muscles get stiffer , or something like that. human nature. Fran
The change in eyesight at around 40 is even more sudden and noticeable for people who are far-sighted. Far-sightededness usually goes undiagnosed, since you can still read the black board as a kid. But far-sighted people unknowingly compensate for it by slightly straining their eyes to adjust to close-up stuff. Then, as you approach middle age, and the flexibility wanes, you lose that ability to adjust as you normally did and have the additional disadvantage of the age far-sighted thing. This was my situation - it's like it happened overnight. Not even time for denial. I thought it was something serious. And once you hit 40, if you fart wrong, you're convinced you have butt cancer. Travis, you are so young. So innocent.
skala67
Im going to go into hiding now so that 40 can't find me...at least i'll have a 9 year head start...If you need me, call witness protection..but don't tell 40 where i am..
