Claudio Branch
Anyone out there have any success rendering SpeedTrees with a medium LOD using GI? I am getting some nice looking trees with shadows, but my render times are going though the roof! I have an 80+ machine farm, but the times are hitting 60+ minutes...too long for my animation! Any suggestions?
Ricardo Eloy
When you say GI, which engine do you mean?
Claudio Branch
I am using the Scanline Renderer in Max with a skylight and a MR Spot Light. Everything is looking good...but those trees are taking a LONG time!
Justin Hunt
Its problably a combination of scanline with skylight. Sklylight shadows can really slow down renders. Have you tried MR with AO? JHV
Claudio Branch
If you mean Mental Ray with (Ambient Occlusion?), no...but please feel free to tell me more... ...I'm listening.
Justin Hunt
Basically you will be using AO to simulate the sky shadows. There are two methodes of use the 1st (my prefered) is @ material level, eg use AO in either seft illumination or in diffuse level. Diffuse level is better. This dives control at material level the 2nd is using it as a projector map on an omni set at 0,0,0. This will give global control. Light your scene as you would in the good old days of Fakeocity, or use a skylight , MR area light and FG. With the FG route be aware of flickering, which wont be an issue with Fakeocity. Glacierise
I know this is an old thread, but nobody answered so - I found that speedtree renders quite fast with the fast rasterizer in mental ray, with GI. Scanliner with the speed shadows is still the faster one, but you'll have to build a lighting rig.
pipjor
i don't use GI(Brazil) w/speed tree, render times way to long. I usally set up 2-3 lights, point(sun) w/shadows on, and a couple of fill lights(omni's) fake GI.
Claudio Branch
I have had much better luck with Onyx trees with regard to rendering speed. Their quality is outstanding as well. My preference these days...
