relevant freeware apps

Recommended Posts

There are so many freeware applications (and Open Source ones), but I like to point you to some I use frequently:

- irfanview for quick screenshots and image cropping/resizing/conversion (instead of waiting for Photoshop to load).

- firefox for browsing

- crimson editor for php/html/script editing

- nvu for wysiwyg web editing (instead of Dreamweaver or Frontpage)

Others I like to mention for CAD/2D/3D are:

- Energyplus

- Alibre Design Express

- Cadvance 6.5 (http://www.cadvance.com/65form.htm)

- Radiance

- SolidEdge 2D

- GimpShop (http://www.plasticbugs.com) Gimp with a Photoshop-like interface

I have a personal blog, where I list many more interesting applications and resources: http://cad-3d.sbuild.com

decided to dig up this old thread, and make an edition. i just found an excellent DVD player. lightweight, and not gaudy.

edit: actually, the scrubbing, and play controls can be a bit buggy at times. ...but still, it is the only free DVD software i have found, besides one that incorporates adware into the mix.

Excellent! I've been looking for a good free DVD player for a while.

OT, I saw you at siggraph but everytime I thought to go meet you in person I got sidetracked. We should have a dinner for all the mods to meet in person next year or something.

Housecleaning? Heres another useful one that came up the other day

Treesize Freeware, it just easily and quickly lists how many GB are in each folder on a drive.. so you too can find those evil podcast directories that have grown to 12gb.. along with that weird 10gb file that appeared in my google earth folder ;) Things i never would have looked for :D

anyway, useful :)

Limitation? Free version only runs on local drives.. need to buy their shareware one to scan network drives.

Sooo.. the other way i'd done that in the past, ghetto slow. Drag a drive into a Nero dvd project ;) it takes a while, but it'll tell you how much is in each folder also!
