VRML/Real-Time Simulation/VR Software?

Hey guys,

We used another firm to create a "virtual reality" model of part of a building site with 7-8 large buildings on it. The firm sent us an .exe and some installation software. When you open the file a window opens and the site appears in 3D. With your keyboard or a joystick, you can fly around and see the buildings; textures, shadows, and all. They did an "okay" job, but the texturing is terribly wrong. Since we do most of our models in house, we'd love to try to make something like this ourselves. It seems like the software should let you import your model, textures, etc, set parameters, and then write your exe file.

Does any one use something like this, recommend something, or atleast point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

Alan

There are quite a few tools out there that can import 3D data and display it in real-time.

Among the most popular you will find:

1. Name: Creative Edition / Power Edition / VR Edition

2. Manufacturer / Developer: Quest 3D

3. Base price: Creative = $1,408 / Power = $3,523 / VR =$14,097

4. General description: VR Version/Power Version/Creative Version are GPU driven VR tools which provide a display of pre-made rendered environments as well as controls for VR Game development. The tool does not support pre-arranged animation and Act 3D is directing its product at digital designers, government agencies, disaster analyzers and game developers.

If you are not happy with any of the ones above and you are a 3DS Max user, you can try this add-on

1. Name: Click VR Visualizer

2. Manufacturer / Developer: Codeblend

3. Base price: $1,380

4. General description: Click-VR is a GPU based engine, designed to give 3DS Max users a real-time environment for previewing their visualization. This system does not support other applications but within 3DS Max it can be used for anything although the focus is exploration of complex scenes in real-time and creation of interactive 3D presentations.

Good luck, I hope this will help you out a little.

It depends on what you're end product is Ihab.. by VR, they mean handling the synchronization needed to render the scene in realtime across multiple computers and deal with the blending of displaying with multiple projectors at once.. with quest, for architecture, 98% of the people will be just fine with the cheap one.

I second the recommendation for Unity3D. It is probably the most artist-friendly game engine/realtime app and still very powerful. I have used it for almost a year and it performs nicely. You have to adapt how you build your models to get the most of it. The user community is very helpful as well.
