Lounge / Study - 2009 Design, Mental Ray

This is the room opposite the Master Bedroom from my last WIP.

Mental Ray, ProDesign Materials where possible, AO pass comp'd in with Photoshopped, Daylight System. No secondary lighting as it's a small room with big windows.

My favourite things about this scene (but I'm biased):

* you can see 'beyond' the room, as if it were in a real house

* the sunlight falling on the arm of the chair

C&C welcomed. (The book jacket is not unwrapped right - sigh)

If this room passes mustard, the Kitchen is next.

Well good going so far :)

What strikes me is the room being too dark. The lamp is overexposed in the bedroom aswell and there is a problem with AA on the door - look at the door window. Im also wondering if the wooden floor isnt reflecting too much.

Would be nice if the sunlight would be hitting the table and carpet. Just a thought :)

aahhhh...

Should I edit the AO render to 'white out' the AO areas in the corners of the walls, and just focus on the other areas of contact?

Hmm... Guess I'm still new with this. Can I get some feedback, please?

Can I ask which looks better - AO wise?

Thanks - I really appreciate it.

I'm with Jakub on this - I don't see why in real life there would be these dark inside corners. I don't use it much anymore.

Are you doing it with AO in the material or as a pass for Photoshop? If it's in the material, can you reduce the amount of its effect, or the value of Dark? Or if it's in Photoshop, lower the layer opactity? I'm thinking maybe the first one but a lot less strong.

Exactly. U know when you look closely - the intersection of a wall and a celing is actually a little filleted - and sometimes it catches specular from celing lamps and camera flash etc.

I have the AO turned on in the material, and doing a render pass for photoshop.

Maybe a rule of thumb:

Do an AO pass (doesn't take very long to do - 1-2 minutes), but don't use it unless you need to.

I just played with taking the 500mm AO, marqueing the furniture and coffee table, and whiting everything else out.

It looked really good - the extra AO brought the wrinkles in the material out, and the AO helped the contact shadow for the table.

A valuable lesson.

I'm now following Horhe's advice and I took some of the shine off the wooden floor, and turned down the brightness of the lights in the bedroom (bed stand and ceiling).

Turned my AA and FG up and doing a higher quality render. Already did my AO pass and will only use parts that need some extra help.

Will post the render when it's through.

Thanks again everyone!

I'm not sure how to make this any better.

I've brightened the overall scene, while getting rid of the overexposed lights in the background.

I've applied some AO selectively to the furniture and the coffee tables and books, getting rid of the AO on the walls, corners, etc. I tweaked some AO in the far background as well.

I'm ready to stick a fork in this puppy... ;)

Anything anyone can think to make this a better scene/render?

Thanking you...

Sweet! I can get my drink on now... ;)

Thanks to YOU GUYS for the feedback - funny, straight forward, honest - it was all great and I learned a great deal tonight.

Thanks again...

PS: I also made the wooden floorboards less reflective, too. Forgot to mention it. No point in pouring all the Mop-n-Glo in the entrance... ;)
